A Realistic Look Into the Rams 2014 1st Round

The Draft:

The St. Louis Rams currently hold the second and 13th pick in the 2014 NFL draft. The last time the Rams held the 2nd overall pick they used it to rob the Washington Redskins of three 1st round picks and a second round pick. Although Rams fans would love to turn similar deal this year to set the rams up with multiple 1st round picks for years to come. But the odds of it happening are slim because there are no RGIII/Andrew Luck type talents in this draft, and even if there was teams would probably think twice about paying that kid of bounty for a QB after seeing how things turned out in Washington. Even though the Rams may not be able to get a king's ransom for this years 2nd pick, trade happy GM Les Snead will still likely trade the pick. Thanks to the Jay Cutler resigning the QB market is weak, arguable the best available is Mike Vick, so teams will be looking for QB's in the draft. The Houston Texans own the 1st overall pick, and are almost guaranteed to draft a QB. New Head Coach/ quarterback whisper Bill O'Brien will have his choice between Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Football, and any other dark horse candidate that's come to light between now and the draft. The Rams hold the second pick, after them the Jags, Browns, Raiders, Falcons, Bucs, and Vikes. One could argue that 5 of those 6 teams need a QB. If any of those teams want the QB the Texans don't take then they need to trade with the Rams to leap frog the Jags (who would gladly take a QB). At the most I see the Rams trade with the Vikings, for the Viking's for their 8th overall pick this year and there 1st next year. At the least I could see the Rams trade with the Jags to flip picks (like the Vikings and Browns did 2 years ago) just to make sure the Jags get their guy. With the Rams 1st pick were ever it may be, i see the team targeting T Jake Matthews if he is still on the board, drafting him will allow the rams to resign Saffold and move him into guard, and play Matthew at RT. Sammy Watkins could be another possible choice, best wide out in the draft, however the rams have drafted 2 WR's in both of the last 2 drafts so I see them sitting with what they have to really get a feel for the young talent they have at receiver. A player that should be considered at either the 1st or 2nd pick is Ha Ha Clinton Dix, drafting him would allow the Rams to pair him with McDonald and allow Rodney McLoud to not only continue to be the special teams caption but also come in as a corner in the nickel or a safety in the dime. With their 2nd first round pick the rams could target other receivers like Texas A&M's Evans or Penn State's Robinson but again the Rams have 5 young wide outs on the roster that are capable. And interesting pick would be Bama's LB Mosley, add him into the mix with Tree and JL55 and all of the sudden the rams have one of the best 4 - 3 linebacker cores to go with there dominant rotation on the front 4. Another route would be to trade down with the 2nd pick and get an OL if they miss on Matthews, Michigan's OT (#77) and Bama's OT (#71) look like possible selections here. As much as some Rams fans would love to see the team draft a quarterback, it seems very unlikely. Jeff Fisher loves Bradford, noting Sam as part of the reason he came to the Rams, Les and Dimmoff have also shown support in Sam the Ram. Moving forward, at least into 2014, the Rams will look to build around Sam's arm and their strong D.
