Rams 2010-2013: A Historical look at the grades

Hi Rams fans!

Yes it’s time for a stroll down memory lane to take a look at how the team has progressed or regressed during the Sam Bradford era circa 2010-2013. Using my newly acquired membership to PFF premium stats I’ve pulled the team stats for all four years. I’ve also pulled them for our division rivals so we can do a comparison and see what there is to learn if anything about where we’ve been and where we are headed.

As a reminder about PFF scoring: 0 = Average expected outcome for any given play. Any score greater than zero is a better than average outcome, and anything less than zero is Bad Monkey territory.

The first thing that should jump out at you is that last year was the best scores of this 4 year cycle. All of the categories are the best except penalties and pass blocking, and that can be explained by the youth factor and improvements to the O-line.

2012 pass ratings are huge which means the QB and the receivers played much better than in the other three years.

The defense chart shows the huge strides made in pass rush, and special teams play. Overall we are almost back to 2010 status. What is our biggest need that shows up in the stats and by watching the games? You guessed it, Pass coverage and penalties took a huge dive this year. If anything says leave the defense intact, and go for better safeties and corner backs this chart does. Everything else is a positive grade and would improve if we can fix the weak secondary.

As an added bonus for those of you that enjoy looking at stats here are the yearly comparisons to our division rivals per PFF grading.
