We all know the old adage, "it is darkest before dawn". It is an adage in the first place because others before us faced difficult times but needed to take a positive attitude in order to persevere. I am just as frustrated as everyone else while watching the games and I am 52 and have been a big Rams fan since I was 9. I do think we need to need to take a more long term perspective and be patient. After all did we really, really think we were going to be a legitimate playoff contender this year? Too much youth and a difficult schedule were headwinds probably to strong to fly fast through. A few things from a perspective point. Yes Fisher's overall record doesn't have a fantastic winning percentage but also he doesn't have a lot of bad seasons. If you analyze the Titans drafts, I don't think you can build a case for a strong front office with great drafting success. Fisher did do a good job coaching up. On the flip side he is loyal and that is a double edge sword. Sometimes he puts too much faith and support behind those that may need more managing, but over time that can also pay off. It happens in the business world, sometimes you have to learn from failure and that can be hard in the short term. I do think our system of drafting with our team in place is much better than Tenessese so you have to think over time Fishers winning percentage with the Rams will improve.
Football is a funny game and requires things to by in sync. You watch an offense like ours and you think how can it be that bad and you watch the Patriots from the undeafeted season or our GSOT Rams and you think how can they be that good? I think our problems are two fold in simplistic terms. Youth and balance. The youth will require our patience. We will see them fail but hopefully learn from it. We will see some simplistic game plans until they are ready for more. They will be out of position, too aggressive, take bad angles, not make the right hot reads, think too much and play slow. We have a lot of these players on both sides of the ball. It will begin to click for each one at a different time and hopefully will for them all. This will not be easy to watch as we all can attest, but it will get better. I love sausage but am glad I don't have to watch how it is made.
As far as balance, you need that ying-yang on both sides of ball. Offense needs to stay on the field so defense can stay rested. We need balance on offense which means We do have to run the ball, but there are two ways to do that. Run to set up pass or pass to set up run. When we look at our team now our line is better pass blockers then run blockers. Pass blocking wasn't bad when Rodger was playing but has suffered since. Teams are now crowding the line because of our tendencies. They know we aren't throwing down field when Sam is under center, they can comfortably crowd the box to stop the run and then blitz if it is a pass and our young receivers are not making their hot reads. You can see Sams frustration. Right now I think we should run the pistol but not because Sam will run but we can run the backs or throw out of it without giving the defense a tendency. Sam is more comfortable in not being under center. We should then spread them. I think the short passing needs to be part of our attack plan but we need to make them pay and go over top more. Now I think our best back is Pead from the spread. Though that is best scenario for DRich as well. I think if we are going to run more with the two tight ends we can still go pistol but use Benny as that back. DRich just can't run inside, hesitates and doesn't keep his legs moving. We need to do this in short term to bring back the balance but over the long term need to be able to go spread or tight depending on defense. We will never be a deep playoff team if we can't run out the clock. Fish is taking the long term view here and I agree. Right now it is as simple as establish the run and stop it. Another example is Dallas, where they are 11-0 when Demarco gets 20 carries and not very good when he doesn't. Gotta run baby.
Just some thoughts, but lets take a step back and look at this season as a whole, we may find ourselves in a better place. I just keep taking deep breaths and dreaming...
