While I have been just as upset as most of the vocal TSTers lately about our offensive and defensive philosophies, the light just shown down on me and I feel at ease.
I will first go into the offense, our dink and dunk style that has been frustrating even the most positive of fans, it seems to me that it is just an extension of the running game. Its an effort to get Drich into space and allow him to make a play. 7.8 yards per catch paired with the 3.3 yards per rush come out to a respectable 4.4 yards per touch. As far as predictability of the play calling, when we are backed up against our goaline the book says to run the ball to get us some space, well we dumped off to DRich a glorified run play, a fluky pick happened and well we know what happened. I think our offense is where it should be or maybe ahead of where it should be, being that its week 2 and Sam is statistically a top 10 qb for the first time. The high tempo Oklahoma style spread we all heard about this offseason, well shit I am at a loss for where that came from or where it went, but we are an 1/8 of the way into a long season, we may just see it, we may be pulling a rope a dope for when we play the niners in a couple weeks, who knows.
This soft off man zone we have been playing has angered me as much as anyone on this site, but I just realized something, its not the secondary or the lbs that is the failure, its our stellar def line, the whole point of cover two, or other off man zone schemes is to get pressure with your front 4 and keep the ball in front of you until the offense makes an error. Quinn is out of this world this year, but the other guys haven't wreaked as much havoc as they could or should. Pressure will create the turnovers and as long as we can generate that pressure with 4 men, then why not drop 7 into coverage and hope that we make a play. Its not the soft coverage that has hurt us, its the lack of plays being made by our playmakers. One thing that we must do is make them pay when they do catch the ball underneath and I think Tree and MacDonald do their best, but the other guys have not. I am gonna say something here that is unpopular, but JL55 has been invisible for some reason, he should be making an impact play at least once a week and I do not recall any, please correct me if I am wrong, but he is our backbone and if he isnt making plays, then who will.
