Rams: A Look at the Numbers

We’ve now reached the half-way point in the preseason. It’s time to take a look at some team and individual stats, and try to make some observations about the team, and the players trying to make the roster.

Stats provided by: http://www.nfl.com/teams/statistics?team=stl

First up are team stats vs. opponents:

What’s interesting here is even though our time of possession vs. opponents is approx. -5 minutes we managed to have more yards passing, and a smalladvantage in yds per rushing attack. I was also surprised to see that we were only 6 first downs behind the competition. What’s discouraging is 3 rd down conversions 7/27 (25.9%) vs. 42% of by our opponents. I guess that shows you what fumbles and penalties will do for you. Not to mention 2nd and 3rd string defense.

Take a look at total Offensive Yds. We’ve managed to win that battle but not convert it into points. And although we have 10 less offensive plays we have the higher number of yards per attempt. Even in a vanilla scheme with our number 1s playing very little… it shows me a trend that this offense could just explode once we let go of the reins. That’s my take-away from looking at this chart. You might come up with a different view. So please tell us all what you make of this.

This is shows us what we pretty much already knew. Sam Bradford is kicking it already, with Davis looking like he should get the number 2 spot and Clemens……well what can you say?

I think we can agree that Daryl Richardson is going to be the starter. And just like we suspected Isaiah Pead has pretty much got himself on the bubble due to his poor performance. I think it’s interesting how close the race for second is between Stacy and Cunningham.

Ok its Wide Receiver time:

I’m convinced that we absolutely keep:

Givens

Austin

Quick

Bailey

Cook

I believe Fisher will keep 6 WR’s like last year… and if I had to pick I’m going with Helmick or Radway making the last spot as number 6. I’m sure you noticed that I left Pettis off the list. I think we are going to let him go, even though he has some red zone success. I think Fisher is planning on Cook/Quick taking over that piece of the puzzle.

The last thing to look at is this mess called Defense:

In spite of our defense not playing like we are accustomed to, we still have managed to put up bigger numbers than our two opponents except in assists and sacks. With the ones in the whole game I doubt that is the case. Considering all the bad tackling we’ve seen I’m really surprised by these totals!

I don’t know what to say about the individual stats except it’s a CF (Cluster F) of wondering how much Fisher holding them back had to do with the player’s abilities.

So that’s how we look after two games…….

Thanks for giving it a read!
