In the history of the NFL only two players can claim to have rushed for and received 1,000 yards in a single season. Their names are HOF's Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk, maybe you've heard of one or both of them. Let's examine each of their seasons,we'll start with Roger Craig.

Important notes

  • Roger Craig played the RB position
  • He averaged 13 ATT, 65 YPG and a 4.91 YPC on the ground. He also had 9 touchdowns but that's not important
  • He averaged 6 REC, 64 YPG and 11.04 Y/R through the air

Now let's look at Mr.Faulks

Important notes

  • Faulk also played RB
  • He averaged 15 ATT, 86 YPG and 5.46 YPC on the ground
  • He averaged 5 REC, 65 YPG and 12.05 Y/R

So, why does any of this matter? Tavon Austin, that's why. The Rams have a dual threat of their own in their speedy rookie receiver. So what would it take for him to achieve this goal? Well if we average out Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk it would take a stat line of something like 14 rushing attempts per game, 5 YPC, 6 receptions per game and 11 Y/R.

Now, what makes this hard to predict is that Austin plays WR, it's silly to think he will get 14 runs per game, it would be surprising if he got half that. He would also probably average more yards per carry*. He's also a rookie, whereas Craig was in his third season and Faulk was in his sixth. So, what's a more reasonable goal for Austin this year? 1,000 combined yards? Let's see what that would take.

Over the past two years receivers taken in the top half of the first round have averaged 860 yards in their rookie years. If Tavon can achieve that number or even come close to it, say 800 or 750 yards then picking up 200 or 250 yards on the ground can easily vault him in to 1,000 yards from from scrimmage, without adding kick or punt return yards.

*I didn't research this, I just made it up off of my head based off of production from guys like Percy Harvin and Randall Cobb
