Andrew Helmick injury: Rams rookie dealing with hamstring injury

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

The Rams' new face of scrappy will miss "a few" weeks with the injury. The team signed Justin Veltung to replace him.

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Andrew Helmick, aka the new face of scrappy, had a setback in his quest to make the team's final 53-man roster. He injured his hamstring in practice this week, and according to Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch, he could miss a few weeks because of that injury.

The Rams signed Helmick as an undrafted rookie free agent. Prior to that, the Lindenwood University product got some looks from other NFL teams in the spring, but didn't stick. Through the first four days of training camp in St. Louis, the 6'0, 192-pound receiver has been turning heads with his speedy play and impressive catches. He suffered his hamstring injury during Monday's practice, the first day the full squad worked in pads.

Helmick was on his way to cult status as another scrappy star only the city of St. Louis could love. (Here's the full scrappy scouting report).

Missed time in camp and the preseason is huge blow to guys on the roster bubble. There are only so many reps to split between 90 players. Helmick's case for making the final cut gets harder with this news, but it's not impossible.

In the meantime, the Rams added wide receiver Justin Veltung to the roster. Seattle signed Veltung in May, but later released him. An Idaho product, Veltung made some waves with a ridiculous 56" box jump. A 46" box jump gets NBA prospects attention, so Veltung's feat is pretty impressive.

Then again, J.J. Watt had a 59" box jump during the offseason ...

Here's video of Veltung's box jump.
