St. Louis Rams cut G Rokevious Watkins

Dilip Vishwanat

Goodbye, Rok.

In a surprising move the St. Louis Rams will release 2012 fifth-round pick Rokevious Watkins, as first reported by Adam Caplan. The move came as a surprise after head coach Jeff Fisher spent the offseason talking up Watkins' ability and even his potential to compete for a starting job.

Last year, the Rams weren't pleased when Watkins showed up to camp 16 pounds overweight. But that was water under the bridge, after some remedial conditioning helped get him back into shape before camp ended.

Watkins was hurt in practice after the first game of the season. Eventually, reports started to surface of him being in better shape. Now, instead of being the heir to veteran guard Harvey Dahl, he's released. So why did the Rams make this move now?

Sounds like he didn't lose as much weight as the Rams hoped he would and as much weight as we were lead to believe.

Watkins was a longshot to start this season, but hopes were that he could develop enough to play next season. This does hurt the Rams' depth. They will again be more than likely look for help at one or both guard spots during next offseason. This year they can roll with the offensive line players on the roster. Chris Williams starts camp as the first-team left guard.

This move should tell players that while Jeff Fisher might be a players coach, that doesn't mean a player is above the law in St. Louis.
