Strength of Schedule – Who Cares?

Did you buy into the hype that strength of schedule (SOS) actually makes a difference? I did and since I don’t have anything better to do, I decided to see about the numbers.

I took the 2010-2013 pre-season SOS, and then logged how many games each team won that season. This is for regular season games only…. so don’t get all worked up yet. I just counted games won, because that’s what it all boils down to. If you win enough games the division battle will take care of itself. Okay so let’s see what we have.

Rams win the same amount of games from both the top and the bottom of the strength of schedule (S). The same thing goes for these other examples especially New England. It seems that a consistently good team doesn’t care what their SOS is. They win about the same amount of games regardless of the schedule. I think this data would be better used to figure out team consistency not a power ranking.
