2013 NFC West Standings Prediction: Yes, It's Too Early!

USA TODAY Sports

Too early to predict how the NFC West will fare in 2013? After looking at the divisions schedules, I don't think so... There are some "linchpin games" for each team though, and October 28th is going to tell the tale for the St. Louis Rams and Seattle Seahawks...

The NFC West has new found respect across the league, and it's deserved. San Francisco and Seattle are in the top four of virtually every early power ranking. St. Louis and Arizona are only a few pieces - and experience - away from making the division a four horse race.

When I took a look at the schedules for each team in 2013, I came away with an almost obsessive desire to prognosticate. So I did! I happen to know if you hold things like this in, you can damage your prostate...

I won't be taking injuries into account, since they are a relative given.

The Rams' schedule has "do-able" written all over it. While I don't think they have a "gimme" game this season, the schedule looks good from a young team point of view. The first half of the 2013 season is solid, and getting to play division rivals earlier in the year can be a double edged sword. In 2012, the Rams benefited by playing the 49ers later in the year. San Francisco's physical style of defense took its toll as the season progressed. I see a 5-3 record during the first half of the season as best case, and the October 28th game against the Seattle Seahawks as being the key for both teams before heading down the stretch. The Rams have a shot of coming out of the last half of the season with a 6-2 record. They get the Titans, Bears, Saints and Tampa at home, with Indianapolis away. What their division foes aren't counting on is how seriously Rams' head coach Jeff Fisher takes division games. He's borderline obsessed with beating the 49ers, Seahawks and Cardinals. His being able to dial his team up a notch at the beginning of the season will help down the stretch. The youngest team in the 2012 NFL got even younger this year. While many would say this bodes for a flat performance - vis a vie last year - teams who sleep on the Rams are going to get slapped silly. The St. Louis defense is the real thing, and their offense could be exciting to watch for the first time in almost a decade.

Arizona started last year off with a four win bang, then began to crumble faster than a bag of Cheetos hit with a baseball bat. Their new head coach Bruce Arian's has made some great moves to shore up quarterback and offensive line questions. The Cardinal's defense is top notch, ranked in the Top 12 in the NFL for 2012. The off field issues with star inside linebacker Daryl Washington may prove to be more important to the team's immediate future than they'd like to admit. They took LSU's Kevin Minter in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, so the loss of Washington for the first four games due to suspension may be lessened. If the Cardinals get any kind of performance out of Carson Palmer and the offensive line, the team could see a 4-4 record at the break. Their second half of the season will depend on what kind of Eagles team they face. A record of 3-5 down the stretch is where I see them.

San Francisco is the best team in the NFC West. Anyone who is buying into Seattle challenging them hasn't been paying attention to just how deep the 49ers are at every position. Collin Kaepernick is a talented guy, with a demeanor that tells me not to expect him to tail off any time soon. He's the real deal people. While I think he needs to learn how to control his cannon-like passing arm, he makes great decisions. The Redskins' RGIII needs to watch film of how Kaepernick avoids contact when he runs. The 49ers defense needs only some inside rush from their defensive line to be one of the best ever. Yes, really! The only mistake I think the 49ers will make this year is looking ahead to their Seattle contests, and paying too little attention to the Rams - don't pay attention to the tie, St. Louis beat them up in both games last year. I think Arizona will catch them sleeping in at least one of their contests this season too. I think the 49ers go 6-2 in the first half of the season, and 6-2 down the stretch.

Seattle IS a talented team. They have what I consider the toughest home field advantage in the NFL, and no team comes out of "Fan Thunder" stadium without their ears ringing for days. They made some outstanding off season moves, but in my opinion had a mediocre 2013 NFL Draft. They made picks like a team that's been winning for years, and not one who still has some "T-s" to cross. Their defense struggled on 3rd down last season, and I don't think they addressed the issue with the high profile signings of Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett - both defensive ends. They didn't address the needs they have defending the run between the tackles. Seattle has the best secondary in the NFL, going away, and safety Kam Chancellor will be trying on a pale yellow HoF jacket some time in the future. The biggest question for the Seahawks is second year quarterback Russell Wilson. Look, I absolutely love this kid, but history shows a sophomore year for most NFL quarterbacks is tough at best. While I think he'll re-produce his 2012 numbers, I don't think it will be enough to get Seattle over the proverbial hump. I think the Seahawks go in the neighborhood of 5-3 in the first half of the 2013 season, and 5-3 in the back half.

NFC West Final Standings:

Team W/L Record
49ers 12-4
Rams 11-5
SEA 10-6
AZ 7-9
