2013 NFL Draft: Updated Needs for the Rams

USA TODAY Sports

What holes do the Rams have left to fill?

The Rams filled two of their needs last night in drafting Tavon Austin and Alec Ogletree. Tavon actually fills two holes, one at slot WR to replace Danny Amendola, and he also doubles as a kick returner. Ogletree gives the Rams an upgrade at OLB and is a great improvement in pass coverage over Jo-Lonn Dunbar.

The Rams still have many needs to fill moving into day two and three of the draft. Let's review them.

Wide Receiver

Adding Tavon Austin is a great help to the position, but the Rams could still use more help. Brain Quick, Chris Givens, Austin Pettis and Austin are the current WRs the Rams have. Adding another receiver, especially a possession receiver like Quinton Patton could do the Rams a lot of good.

Offense Line

I still have no idea who is going to play left guard for this team. Hopefully it will be someone who is drafted this season. The Rams also need to be looking at centers and tackles. Scott Wells is up there in age, and is no longer dependable due to injuries. Roger Saffold is on the last year of his contract, and he may leave to play LT in free agency. I would be shocked if the Rams did not pick up an offensive linemen before the 5th round.

Defensive Line

The Rams have a great defensive line. Chris Long, William Hayes, Robert Quinn, Michael Brockers and Kendall Langford are a tremendous unit, but there is little depth behind them. Adding a young developmental defensive lineman would be a smart move by the Rams. Keeping a good rotation is important to keep players fresh for the 4th quarter.

Running Back

The Rams lost Steven Jackson and have done nothing to replace him yet. The team is high on Isiah Pead and Daryl Richardson. Richardson was productive his rookei year and Pead has potential, but either player has much power. Adding a RB who can grind out tough yards is a necessity for the Rams rushing attack in 2013.

Safety

Right now the only safety who has any starting experience on the Rams roster is Darian Stewart, who sat on the bench behind Craig Dahl last season. The Rams are going to address safety. What will be interesting is the style of safety they choose to pick. Will it be a big, hard-hitting safety, or more of a ball hawk?

Cornerback

The Rams corners are a major strength, but they did let Bradley Fletcher walk in free agency. There is currently only 3 corners the Rams can count on in 2013, Cortland Finnegan, Trumaine Johnson and Janoris Jenkins. In today's NFL you need at least 4 dependable guys, likely 5.
