If you've been anywhere in the general vicinity of Twitter today, you'd know that it's International Mike Mayock Day or some damn holiday like that. The NFL Network let its draft guru out his cage this afternoon (they start starving him a week before the draft to get him in fighting mode). He dished on anything and everything related to all 300+ draft eligible players. So about the St. Louis Rams?
His comments on the safeties were of particular interest. Kenny Vaccaro is Mayock's top ranked safety, and he predicted that the Texas product could be in play for the Bengals at No. 21. That would make him available for the Rams at No. 16, but the draft spot and value might be out of whack.
Matt Elam is officially Mayock's second favorite safety. His biggest concern is his height at 5'10", but other than that, America's favorite draft guru and former safety himself says the former Gator can do anything. He likes the way his hips move, and notes that Elam is a hard hitter.
He puts Jonathan Cyprien in the second round, the early part of it. There's also Eric Reid from LSU. Mayock has him ranked as his fourth safety, and calls him a "wildcard." As far as a ballhawking safety, Mayock says that would be Phillip Thomas from Fresno State.
So there's a look at Mike Mayock's board for safeties. The question for us is what the Rams board looks like.
