One other impending deal to report: QB Kellen Clemens has agreed to return to the Rams on a one-year minimum deal. Will sign tomorrow.— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) April 16, 2013
This will be Clemens' third season with the Rams. He signed as a street free agent during the second half of the 2011 season to fill in for an injured Sam Bradford. Jeff Fisher and Co. kept him around on a one-year deal last year. He and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer have some history together with the Jets.
How does this move change the depth chart at quarterback? At the Combine, Jeff Fisher told TST that Austin Davis, an undrafted rookie out of Southern Mississippi, was the team's new backup quarterback and would be even if Clemens were on the roster.
Fisher praised Clemens for his leadership and his role in the locker room during that same interview at the Combine. He did not rule out the possibility of bringing him back this year at that time either.
The order could still change over the course of training camp and the preseason. There had been some speculation that the Rams might draft another quarterback in the later rounds of the draft. That seems less likely now, though still a possibility.
Clemens, Davis or Davis, Clemens, the order doesn't really matter. The most important quarterback on the roster, and the key to the team's success this year, is Sam Bradford. Neither player poses any kind of threat to unseat him for the top spot.
