Patterson and Tavon, and the K29 WR Rankings!

Feel free to skip to the WR board at the bottom. I put together a combo of grades on WR's from Draftek, Walterfootball, CBS, MTD and NFL at the bottom and called it the K29 rating. Also, I probably should've split this up, but I was on a roll soooo... Here it is!

Thoughts

I've been thinking about the role of playmakers on offenses for a little bit the last couple of days. It's mostly because of all the hype for Tavon Austin and the hype that used to surround Patterson (seems like people have cooled off a little).

The reason I'm not ecstatic about getting Tavon or Patterson or both is because of the current design of our offense. If you look at our skill players you see 2 RB's, 3 WR's, and 2 TE's vying for playing time. Let's say Pead steals the start at RB, Pettis is a guy we're comfortable having on the bench, and the rest should be on the field.

That leaves Quick and Givens at WR, Kendricks at TE, Cook on the field somewhere, and Pead taking handoffs. That's 5 skill players, which is the max you'll see with 5 OL and 1 QB always on the field. So let's say we pickup Patterson. Do you start him over Quick or Givens? Doubtful. Do you take out Kendricks and squeeze Cook down into the traditional TE spot? That might not be a good fit. Do you just split 4 wide with Cook, Givens, Quick, and Patterson out there? Certainly not too often.

This thought process applies to Austin too, but to a lesser extent. Austin playing out of the backfield is a definite possibility. That said, grabbing Giovanni Bernard would be a better upgrade at RB. The other thing about Austin is he might warrant the #1 WR role that Amendola had. He could flourish in a role like DJax's but I think he's easier to place as a Sproles/Harvin type player.

Do you expect one of these guys to put Quick or Givens on the bench? I'd say no. Do you expect Allen, Hopkins, or Hunter to do that? I'd say yes.

Do you expect one of these guys to put Kendricks or Cook on the bench? I'd say yes. But only intermittently, which raises the question, do you really want to splurge an early draft pick on a player who sits on the bench for some offensive plays?

Now this whole logic rests on the idea that Austin or Patterson will not immediately become the best WR's on the Rams roster, which could be false. But it's been eating at me a little and I wanted to get this down before it wasn't as clear to me.

K29 WR Rankings Compilation

This is just a WR rank using a bunch of other websites' data.

I took the big boards of the sites from the top and gave point values to the top 100 spots (because I'm not interested in later round WR's). If a WR was in the top 100 of two of the big boards, I included them. If they were ranked #1 on the big board they got 100, #26 they get 75 points, #100 they got 1 point, outside 100 they got 0 points, etc. I summed their scores then divided by 5 to get the K29 rating :)

The NFL.com stuff got a lot of weight because they used grades instead of a big board, so their points are all closer to 100 than it should've been, but if you think Mayock is a better evaluator than most, then this should help, lol. Walterfootball and CBS were updated at 3/21, MTD was updated 3/8, Drafttek at 3/23, and NFL.com I'm not sure.
