In case you were out snorting Jell-O this afternoon, there have been a few things bubbling up on the free agent front. Not much of consequence for the St. Louis Rams, but things worth some discussion. Let's jump right into it.
Brandon Gibson signs with the Dolphins
It's been looking all along like Gibson would end up in the AFC East, and sure enough he did. The Dolphins signed him to a three-year. Financial terms were not reported as of yet, but I'll be curious to see what they are. It might mean the Dolphins dump Davone Bess.
For those of you keeping score at home, with Steven Jackson in Atlanta, Danny Amendola in New England and Gibson in Miami, the Rams have now lost three of their top four offensive contributors from last season.
Jake Long is ...
Well, it's the same with Jake Long as it was a couple hours ago, which is to say that nothing has happened. His wife did post this ominous tweet this afternoon:
Heading to the airport soon, don't worry...we're getting close to the end of all of this!— Jackie Long (@jackielong_17) March 15, 2013
Frankly, I'll be glad to have resolution on this saga just to see it end.
Louis Delmas and the Rams' contract offer
The Rams did make an offer to former Lions safety Louis Delmas, but it wasn't enough for his liking. He ended up back in Detroit on a two-year deal worth $9.4 million. The Rams only offered him one year, according to Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch.
We don't know the financial terms, but one year is a very reasonable offer for a player who dealt with serious knee issues in the last two seasons. It also says that the Rams are being cautious in free agency, not handing out crazy deals. That makes me wonder about their offer to Jake Long. I'll bet it was a deal lower on guaranteed money than the tackle wanted to see, something conservative based on his recent injury history, but we don't know that.
