I have some questions about Quintin Mikell. First off, why are so many people considering him a free safety? I realize he played that position for us in 2011, but he wasn't all that good at it. This year, he played the strong safety position and performed admirably. He was a very good run defender and blitzer. PFF even said he played at a pro bowl level.
Second, many people think he should be cut due to his cap hit. This year he has a $9 mil cap hit. He has $12 mil in bonuses which, I'm assuming, have already been paid. His $1 mil base salary for the last two years, I'm assuming was guaranteed, has also been paid making up the his $14 mil guaranteed money. Of that $14 million guaranteed, so far, only $8 mil has hit the cap. If he were to be cut this offseason, the other $6 mil still has to go against the cap some time. My question is would that money go against the cap in 2013, or would it be split between 2013 and 2014? I'm looking in the direction of Ramsfan1313 (since you're the apparent cap expert on TST) or anyone else that can answer definitively.
If we cut Mikell, he will still cost us $6 mil in dead money. Whether that's $6 mil next year or $3 mil each of the next two years, I don't know. Understanding this, is he still a good candidate to be cut to save cap space? I think he should remain our starting SS this year and be cut after the 2013 season. Please enlighten me with your knowledge and opinions on the matter.
