The St. Louis Rams' might be going into the 2013 season without the team's best receiver. According to Jim Thomas at the Post-Dispatch, the Rams and Danny Amendola are ways from coming to terms on a new contract.

Amdendola – 63 catches, 666 yards, three touchdowns – has been St. Louis' best receiver for the past few season. The four-year veteran displayed he can be more than just a slot receiver last year, lining up on the outside on occasion. His yards per catch last year was 10.6, almost two yards more than his career average of 8.8. Also, Amendola recorded his longest catch of his career in 2012, a 56-yarder.

His biggest issue, however, has been staying on the field. He's been limited to 12 games over the past two seasons. Amendola missed all but one game during the 2011 campaign and five games last year. That can be Danny's downfall.

The franchise tag is an option for Amendola, albeit an unlikely one. Under the terms of this year's franchise tender, teams would be on the hook for nearly $11 million on a one-year deal for a wide receiver. Prior reports have said that a $6 million deal would be out of the Rams' price range, which takes away the tag option for St. Louis.

If the Rams cannot come to terms with Amendola, the already receiver-hungry team will be starving. The only wide-outs signed through the next season are third-year player Austin Pettis and second-year pass-catchers Chris Givens and Brian Quick.

Fellow receiver Brandon Gibson is also slated for free agency, but Thomas writes his signing "doesn’t appear likely."

Waiver wire pick up Titus Young was released after a week, further attributing to the lack of depth at the position.
