So we all know that the Rams need a new receiver. Especially if resigning Danny and Gibson is a no go. So far, people speak of Cordarelle Patterson and Tavon Austin, citing they are game changers. While I don't disagree, in this post, I am going to look at the receivers that have worked for Sam. And there is a resemblance among them.
The receivers Sam has had the most success with so far are in my opinion Danny Amendola, Brandon Gibson, Mark Clayton, Chris Givens and Ryan Boyles. This is based off mostly an eye ball test. Boyles is there because of the time he worked with Sam in college. Gibson is there because when he is in the mood, he shows flashes of potential. Now on to the similarities.
1) They are all under 6 feet.
All of them are under 6 feet. I am not saying that Sam can not work with taller receivers, but it shows that he has no issues with shorter ones. Also, if you look at the other criteria, by coincidence, the receivers he had that fit under them, were under 6 feet. So if there was a 6"3 receiver who could run routes and catch, I am sure Sam would preform well.
2) They are all good route runners.
Remember, Gibson is on this list for the times he is actually playing well, and during those times, he is a good route runner. His TD against the Redskins proof enough. Givens and Boyles were known for their route running out of college.
3) All of them have solid hands.
Again, remember Gibson's catch against Buffallo? The one where he twisted around to catch it one handed? Again, this is when he is being good, so it counts. Danny we know is solid. Givens showed nice hands as well.
4) All of them are shifty, quick types.
None of them are particularly fast, instead all of them have quick cuts and movements.
So, in this current draft, which receivers fall under the category of a Sam receiver?
Stedman Bailley. Tavon Austin, Markus Wheaton. Quinton Patton, Robert Woods, Conner Vernon and DeAndre Hopkins, who may actually be the best fit.
I am not saying Sam can not preform with a receiver who does not fit inside these criteria, but so far, it seems to work for him, and if it ain't broke........
