So here we have it. Let's cast it in stone, right? Well, maybe not. Considering this was started in mid-January it will be interesting to see how this mock stacks up with the actual 1st round come April. By January last year I think everyone pretty much had the top 6 draft picks figured out - Luck, RG3, Kalil, Richardson, Claiborne, and Blackmon. The issue was who was going to pick them within those first 6 picks. Naturally, that wasn't decided until some of those picks were actually on the clock. The Browns were suckered into trading up to #3 to grab Richardson. The Vikings pulled one over on the Browns and dropped to #4 and still got their man, Matt Kalil. Jacksonville traded up to #5 to take Blackmon, which prompted the Rams to trade back with Dallas, who then promptly took Claiborne at #6. The 6 players predicted to go in the top 6 did, just not in the exact order or to the exact teams originally predicted.
I honestly can't argue that the top 6 picks in our mock won't be the top 6 taken in the real draft. I will argue that a QB will not be taken in the top 20, and possibly not even in the 1st round. It will be interesting to see if the Cardinals take Eric Fisher at #7, or if they expect their young LT to keep improving and instead opt for Warmack to solidify their interior O-line. People aren't talking about it much, but the Bills really need a WR to pair with Stevie Johnson. If Patterson blows up the combine I wouldn't be surprised if they beat the Dolphins to the punch and take him at #8.
Of course free agency will have a huge impact on the draft. Teams that were looking toward possibly signing Michael Vick know he's off the market already. Does someone try to trade for Alex Smith or Matt Flynn? Or do they just wait for their inevitable release from their current teams? Several teams will fill current holes in their roster and scratch that area off as an absolute need in the draft, while others will lose players that will cause them to change how they approach the draft.
Draft day trades will happen, although to what extent is hard to say. With the rookie wage scale it makes it so much easier to trade up / down at the top of the 1st round. Are there any players worth trading up for? I have a hunch we may see more action in the latter half of the 1st round this year than in the top half. Of course, I'm probably wrong.
Predicting the draft is like predicting the weather - Everyone knows what they want, and several "experts" will tell you how it's going to be, but in the end nobody really knows until it happens, and there are often several unexpected surprises.
On that note I'd like to thank everyone for participating in the mock draft. I had fun with it and think we should maybe try another one a month before the draft. I am also considering going to each fan site on SB*Nation and letting them vote for who they want their team to take. If you guys have any suggestions let me know. Thanks again.
