Just to start, I love Steven Jackson. He is a leader and warrior who has continued to play hard during the most difficult times. I do however want this post to be about making the most intelligent decision and not an emotional one. This team is being build to compete for a Superbowl in 2015. We can argue about the exact year, but we probably wouldn't argue that the year is 2013. This is not saying that the coaches and the players won't try to win this year but rather we are not roster ready for the grand game. In 2015 we could be however and Jack won't be here then. We don't have to look past two of our greatest to see that. Marshal at age 29 - 953 yards, 30 - 818, 31 - 774 then dropped off dramatically. Look at Eric Dickerson at age 29 - 1311, 30 - 677, 31 -536. Jack just finished this past season at 29 and barely reached 1000 yards with 1042. As they say, Father Time is undefeated. It is not hard to forecast what will happen the next few years.
So what if we invested his current $7k differently? What if we took his 7 + Hunters 4 and flipped that 11 over to Dwayne Bowe? We then would probably have to let Danny walk. I know we would still have a lot more work to do on the cap to get our rookies and a few of our other free agents signed. Remember though we are building for 2015 not 2013. Bowe can be contributing to that Super Bowl run in his prime. It is scary how much he could help Sam and offense. That would take early WR off the board and let us focus on OL and SS in draft, thus further strengthening our ability to compete and win on every Sunday (Monday and Thursdays too).
What about Jacks? He will probably be still productive in 2013 and doesn't he deserve to get to the big game? Can't we let him go and let him experience that? Would be nice to see him go out winning one. Then he can sign with us later and retire the next day and go out as a Ram. I am sure he would be one of our biggest fans watching in 2015 and all of us in Ram nation would be as well.
