With the thirtieth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft the Atlanta Falcons select Shariff Floyd, DT, Florida.
Next we address the 31st pick in the draft - The San Francisco 49ers are on the clock.
#31 San Francisco 49ers. Needs - DE, DT, S. The 49ers rode their strong running game and stout defense to the Superbowl in 2012, but fell short of the ultimate prize via a 3 point loss to the Ravens in Superbowl XLVII. A poor start that saw the Ravens capitalize on crucial mistakes by Colin Kaepernick and LaMichael James put the 49ers in a hole they couldn't dig themselves out of.
The 49ers offense was keyed by the run game in 2012. They were 4th in the NFL in rushing, and only the Vikings and Redskins averaged better than the Niners 5.1 yards per carry. San Francisco used that run game to help score 25 points per game, good for 11th in the League. Their passing attack wasn't quite so difficult to handle. Only 23rd in passing yards while allowing a surprising 41 sacks on the season showed they have room to improve in that area.
The Niners defense had very little trouble stopping opponents in 2012, finishing 4th vs. the pass, 4th vs. the run, and 3rd overall. Only the Buccaneers and Broncos allowed fewer yards per carry than the 3.7 yards per carry the 49ers gave up last season. Not surprisingly the Niners finished 2nd only to the Seahawks in points allowed, giving up 17 per contest. While not being known as an outstanding pass rushing defense, the 49ers did manage to collect 38 sacks on the year, good for 11th in the NFL. Their worst ranking came in takeaways, where they finished 14th, with 25 takeaways for the season.
San Francisco is a team without a lot of holes. Their D-line is getting old, with starters Justin Smith (soon to be 34) and Isaac Sopoaga (soon to be 32) well into their 30's. Sopoaga is a free agent. Smith is especially important to the 49ers defense, as was evidenced by their lower level of play when he was out with the arm injury. Do they bolster that unit here? CB Carlos Rogers is well into his 30's as well, and Safety Dashon Goldson is a free agent, so maybe the Niners look to add talent to their secondary with this pick.. TE Delanie Walker is a free agent and may leave also. Do they grab one of the TEs here? Who do they take?
