Playoff Magic Numbers

I believe we still have a shot at the playoffs because of this information I discovered. Magic Numbers refers to how many of the remaining games a team must win in order to clinch a playoff spot.

X = Cannot win playoff spot

DNCD = Does Not Control Own Destiny

Number = The number of consecutive upcoming games that must be won to guarantee winning that spot.

To get an idea about where we might end up let’s first dissect this chart. It’s easiest to take all the teams that must win out in order to clinch that last playoff spot (#6).

So looking down from the last spot we see that Seattle only needs to win 2 more games to clinch that spot and the Saints only need 4 games.

Seattle’s remaining schedule: I think it’s reasonable to assume that they can win at least two of these games so I’m going to call them safe. In fact they will probably win NFC unless we can put a hurting on them.

New Orleans

@San Francisco

@New York

Arizona

St. Louis

The Saints remaining schedule is: I don’t know about you, but I’m having a hard time seeing 4 wins out of this schedule. Atlanta and Tampa are fairly easy wins but the rest are up for grabs. Rams control their own destiny and screw the Saints by beating them because I think that’s their best shot at win number 4.

@Atlanta

@Sea

Car

@STL

@Car

Tampa

Okay now we are down to the teams that need 5 wins to clinch the number 6 spot. The Eagles and Panthers each need at least 5 wins, so let’s see what their schedules look like.

Eagles remaining schedule: The Eagles would have to win all five of these games and I don’t see that happening.

Bye

Cardinals

Lions

@Vikings

Bears

@Cowboys

Panthers remaining schedule: Panthers have a good shot except for New Orleans, they are sure to drop at least one game out of this five.

@Dolphins

Tampa

@NO

NYJ

@ATL

The teams needing to win out to clench the number 6 spot are:

49ers

Cowboys

Cardinals

Packers

49ers have to play Seattle and Us, I don’t see them winning out on this schedule.

@ Washington

vs. St. Louis

vs. Seattle

@ Tampa Bay

vs. Atlanta

@ Arizona

The same goes for the Cardinals. In fact I see six losses here for the Cards.

vs. Indianapolis

@ Philadelphia

vs. St. Louis

@ Tennessee

@ Seattle

vs. 49ers

Dallas will have its work cut out for them. I only see 2 sure wins not 6.

@NYG

Oak

@Bears

Green Bay

@Wash

Eagles

Packers don’t look much better with their remaining 6 games. I can see at least 2 losses from this schedule.

Vikings

@Lions

Atlanta

@ Cowboys

Steelers

@Bears

Putting it all together:

The Rams can go a long way to controlling their playoff hopes by winning all three remaining division games. We need to beat SF, Sea, and AZ to shorten the distance between us. Of course they need to lose some games as well. But you’ve seen the schedules above. I don’t think any of those teams are going to win out.

We still have a pretty good shot at that last wildcard spot provided we don’t blow the rest of the season. I think we can only afford one more loss if we have any chance at the last playoff spot. Of course a lot can happen and some teams can drop the ball which may have great rewards for the Rams.
