The Case for Austin Davis

The Case for Austin Davis

Now that we’ve seen what our first backup Kellen Clemens has done, its time to examine the other possibilities on the Rams current roster. First of all let’s get a look at stats from all four QB’s.

I guess the thing that stands out the most between Sam and his two immediate backups is the QB Rate at the end of the passing row. Sam is approximately 20% better than Kellen or Brady. In all major areas Sam is way better than these guys. I don’t see us winning much with this quality of backups so let’s give up on winning a few games this year and see what Austin Davis has to offer.

I realize college is not the Pro’s but it’s the only stats we have to judge Davis with.

This is from his scouting report:

"Positives:

Experienced, four-year starter. Good athlete. Steps up in the pocket and slides to avoid pressure. High release point. Good short accuracy. Extends plays with his legs, can tuck it and run and knows how to slide. Smart — shows some savvy to read defenses and scan progressively. Tough and extremely competitive — finds a way. Marry-your-daughter-type intangibles — very hardworking, well-respected leader with a professional makeup. Commands the huddle.

Negatives:

Lacks ideal height. Operated exclusively out of the shotgun and will have to adapt to taking snaps from under center. Average arm strength. Labors to throw deep — hangs too many passes. Could stand to refine footwork and mechanics.

Summary:

An athletic, experienced, move-the-pocket, short-to-intermediate passer who broke Brett Favre’s school passing records, Davis has the intelligence, work ethic and functional passing skill to minimally stick as a No. 3. Has the type of makeup to will his way into a lineup and vastly outplay his draft status in 5-7 years."

In conclusion Davis is a shotgun QB that can scramble. With 25 rushing TD’s in his college career that is pretty obvious. He can throw short passes accurately and according to what I’ve read has already learned our playbook.

The problem is Fisher and Schotty are stubborn old geezers that won’t put Davis in the pistol, or tailor the offense to fit his skill set. Yeah I know that sounds like a broken record doesn’t it? If they won’t change the scheme for Bradford they sure as hell aren’t going to do it for Davis.

Considering that we probably won’t win more than two more games at best, I’d put him in there and let him learn how to become a good backup.

That would save us a draft pick in 2014 that could be used for another area instead of a QB.
