Thanks, but no thanks. That's the response a desperate St. Louis Rams team got from Brett Favre. Actually, his actual response went like this:
"It's flattering, but there's no way in hell I'm going to do that."
That's what Favre told Sports Talk 570 in Washington, DC, on Thursday morning. In that same interview he did confirm that the Rams reached out to him about the quarterback job vacated by Sam Bradford. The Rams fourth-year starter tore his ACL in a loss to the Panthers last week. He's out for the season.
Favre's moved on completely from the NFL.
"I do watch games, [but] I don't watch them a lot. I can honestly sit here and say I don't go ‘I want to do that' or ‘I feel like I could do that better.' I leave that up to other people. I think if anything the last year I played was an obvious, writing-on-the-wall vision for you, if you will. It was time. ... When I left the NFL, it felt like I didn't need to stick around. I didn't need to be a part of it to feel like I had a purpose in life."
As far as the Rams go, they're not confirming or denying that Favre got a call from them. Favre and Austin Davis do share the same agent, Bus Cook.
Rams aren't really commenting on the ESPN report of them contacting Brett Favre, but certainly haven't had anyone deny it to me, either ...— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) October 24, 2013
This all comes less than two weeks after Favre told USA Today that he had no interest in returning to the game. Which raises questions about the Rams' reasons for inquiring. With St. Louis firmly focused on the World Series and a Monday night game at the Dome against a heavily favored Seattle team, the city's not exactly buzzing with enthusiasm for the Rams.
A timely call to Brett Favre isn't a bad way to insert yourself back into the headlines ... nevermind the fact that excitement about a team signing Brett Favre sort of peaked seven years ago.
Then again, maybe the Rams took one look at the available quarterbacks on the market and thought it was worth offering the old Gunslinger himself a chance.
