This was a game that we let slip away. We improved offensively and defensively on many of the deficiecies that have plagued our team all year.We did some wonderful things today. We got them off the field on third down (2-9). We held them as a team to 102 yards rushing, and less then 3 yards a carry. We held them to 180 yards passing, their number 1 wr did not explode for a massive game, he did score a td on 5 catches, but he was not the reason we lost. We held them out of the endzone pretty well, they scored 30, but we had a goal line stand and the were 2-4 in the red zone.
We got beaten today, it was bad, but the team that lined up against us did not beat us, we beat ourselves. We committed 8 penalties. We had 4 fumbles and lost 2 of them. We are normally money in the red zone, but today we went 1 for 3, we also went 1 for 3 with goal to go situations. We were unable to slow Cam Newton down at all, he was able to connect 15 of 17 passes. Our newfound running game netted 3 first downs. We were unable to convert on third down, 4-13. We were unable to slow down their penetration, 4 sacks, and 5 tfl.
Its gamesmenship when Cortland Finnegan gets under the enemies skin, Its Gamesmenship when we play through the whistle, Its Gamesmenship when we are doing the ass kicking and taking the names, Today we got our lunch money took and it did not feel good. We cannot with all humility be upset with the way we melted down on the field, It was a glorious meltdown, Ricky Bobby would have been proud, We need to learn how to play with control violence, if we cannot do that then we are just thugs. We lost the game, we lost our composure, we lost the hope we had developed over the last few weeks. Today we lost alot. So we can sit here and gripe about it, we can get in arguements with the Panthers or we can be men, take our ass whooping and move on. We are Ram Fans we are the best mock drafters of any team on the NFL, we are the dreamers, we are the ones that have nothing but hope. We have come too far to flop on the ground and give in. We have been beaten worse, we have had games where the players did not even try, these young men tried their best today. It is growing more and more apparent that our coaching staff is not doing enough. Someone must take accountability for if that does not happen the fans will grow resentment.
Today Schotty called a better game, I guess, but we lack one fundamental thing most every offense has, that is an identity. Schotty still has yet to create rhythm for our offense. He did get Quick and Austin involved early and often. Stacy was able to be Stacy. We have alot of mouths to feed, and not everyone of our playmakers will be happy, but they will have to compete and get open faster if they want the ball. Sam hit 9 different receivers, that shows a command of the playbook and the ability to locate the open man. We were unprepared for their adjustments, we did not react well to things we did not expect. Case in point, Carolina has not blitzed very often this year, they have been able to get pressure with their front four, but today they blitzed. On the first play Stacy was unable to pick it up effectively and Sam was hit as he through leading to the interception. Sam has thrown 4 interceptions this season and 3 of them have been returned for touchdowns. This is unacceptably high.
Today our soft coverage failed us. The Panthers were able to complete whatever passes they wanted to, 1 wr did not beat us, their whole team did in collective fashion. We were able to contain Cam Newton running, he avg 2.6 yards per carry. We were able to contain their run, but we were unable to make them one dimensional. Walton maybe doing the best he can with the players he has. I have no idea what has happened to our coverage skills, JJ last year took a lot of risks and got burned, but he made some plays and that made up for it. Tru the last two games has caught the bug that Fin had. In theory we play off coverage to keep the ball in front of us, so we can read and react and make plays. It is a zone so there are plenty of responsible parties and without knowing first hand knowledge of the scheme I will not place blame on an individual. Due to injuries and lack of depth our secondary is not very good to say the least. In a normal world when a team has a void in a certain area the coaches or the team leaders rally the team together and motivate the linebackers and Dline to pick up the slack and take some pressure off of the secondary. We are not playing as a team. We are not being coached to be successful, we are still being taught fundamentals. Mcleod does not possess the ability to cover the slot, a tight end, a Cars song on karaoke night. When we blitz the coverage behind the blitz is soft allowing an easy hot route escape for the opponent. We do not disguise coverage, blitz, or anything and that is just not acceptable, especially from a team coached by a moustache.
I fear we are corrupting and wasting the youth and talent we have collected over the last 18 months. I understand there will be bumps in the road, but we are not well coached and I at minimum expected that. Last year, I recall some loses and having hope because we were at least professional, we fought for 60 minutes. We have not had a meltdown like that in my recent memory, As a captain Chris Long cannot put himself in a position to be ejected. He needs to stand above the skirmish. He only hurt his team with his actions today. We lack discipline, its embarrassing and I would have expected a team with the veteran coaching staff we have to be professional, and disciplined in their approach. We run around that field aimlessly. Our only Identity is that we are a team that a struggling team can get well against. What happened to the hard nosed tough team we were supposed to be? We are soft, undisciplined, we play football fecklessly. And yes you will have to consult Douglas on the meaning of that last word.
At the end of the day we cannot blame the refs for the loss, we cannot blame being on the road, or the weather, we cannot blame each other. What needs to be done is each person on the team, coaches included they need to sit down with a mirror and take full accountability for their actions. Accepting fault is the positive human behavior as opposed to casting blame. A letter from the league office stating which calls were blown will not change the outcome. Our public meltdown on the field was embarrassing. It simply cannot happen again. We are a proud franchise and reaching new lows week in and week out can only be accepted for so long. We now have to play the best team in the NFC, we have to play our rival as we are at our lowest point since the Snead era began and the Seahawks are riding high. They have had 10 days to prepare for us and we will be with near certainty without our best player. Lets just see what kind of men suit up on Sunday because I am ashamed to be a Rams fan today.
