St. Louis Rams vs Carolina Panthers: A History Lesson

Dilip Vishwanat

The St. Louis Rams and Carolina Panthers may have more of a history than you think. Once NFC West rivals, they played twice a season from 1995 to 2001.

Remember, a little over a decade ago, when the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, and New Orleans Saints helped comprise the five-team NFC West? The Panthers and St. Louis Rams became very familiar with one another, having played each other twice a season [for seven years] after the Panthers joined the NFL in 1995.

The Panthers now call the NFC South home, and though they play the Rams far less frequently, the history remains. Let’s have a look at how these two teams have stacked up over the past 19 years. The link on the date will re-direct you to either an ESPN or Pro Football Reference box score for that particular game.

Playoff History:
January 10th, 2004 - The Rams entered the game having finished the 2004 season with a 12-4 record; the Panthers one game behind at 11-5. The game took place in St. Louis, where the Rams had gone undefeated [8-0] on the year.

The Rams found success moving the ball early, though getting into the end zone proved to be daunting. The Rams first three scores came on field goals, when the team's drive stalled at the three, nine, and seven yard lines. It was a day where Jeff Wilkins was called on frequently. Wilkins kicked five field goals [20, 26, 24, 51, 33]. Their inability to convert red zone trips into touchdowns would ultimately prove to be their demise. Three INT’s from Marc Bulger didn’t help matters either.

When regulation ended, the game was a 23-23 tie. Steve Smith - the same Steve Smith that’ll be taking the field this Sunday - was ready to head back to Carolina. 69 yards later it was 29-23, Panthers. The Panthers then made their way to the Super Bowl, falling to the Patriots by just three points [32-29].

The last time these two teams met, Sam Bradford was in his rookie year in the NFL [2010]. The Rams won that game 20-10. Bradford finished the day going 25 for 32, totalling 191 yards and 2 TD’s. Matt Moore was leading the Panthers that day. It’s fair to say that Cam Newton is an upgrade at QB.

Niether team has been stellar since their last meeting either. The Rams won 16 games from 2010 to 2012. The Panthers? 15. Fresh, young talent on both sides of the ball will make for an exciting matchup this Sunday.

Will the Rams secure their 9th win in the 20-game series this weekend, or will the Panthers widen their three win gap?
