Senior Bowl 2013 Practice Week Recap

As promised on the Turf Show Radio Show last night, here it is:

Team North

1. Mike Glennon NC State - Glennon had a good week of practice, solidifying his status as one of the top QBs in the class. He needs to work on being more consistent. Glennon could be all world one game and then very ugly the next. Another negative is that he doesn't look the part and needs to hit the gym to avoid looking like a high school QB ala Kellen Moore of last year.

2. Ryan Nassib Syracuse - Nassib flashed his potential at times and other times, he showed he needs work on his touch and accuracy. He displayed a good arm strength quality in team drills. I can see him going in the second round but due to the needs of quarterbacks in a lot of places, can see him sneaking in the first.

3. Zac Dysert Miami (OH) - Dysert looked good in some drills but generally had more bad moments than good ones. It looked like the step up in competition affected him in a bad way.

RB

1. Johnathan Franklin UCLA - Franklin showed everyone why he was a 1,700 yard rusher his senior season. He was the top back on both teams throughout the week. He has the speed, vision, and power to make a good living as a pro.

2. Kenjon Barner Oregon - Barner also had a good week. Although he came in undersized, he showed underrated blocking skills, great speed and vision, and underrated strength.

WR

1. Markus Wheaton Oregon State - Wheaton was excellent during practices. Hands down, the best receiver on the North team. He has that extra gear that many don't have. A speed merchant he is.

2. Marquise Goodwin Texas - Goodwin was also electric in practice. He's an Olympic track athlete and it shows. An explosive speed demon who showed better strength than size belies. He's best suited in the slot and returning kicks.

3. Chris Harper Kansas State - Harper isn't the fastest or quickest of the lot but he's a solid possession type in the mold of Steelers great Hines Ward.

OL

1. Eric Fisher Central Michigan - He wowed every single practice with very few losses in 1 on 1s. Fisher has caught Luke Joeckel as the top tackle in the draft with a great week. Fisher needs to correct his tendency to play too tall at times however.

2. David Quessenbery SJSU - The 2nd best lineman I saw on the North. He was very consistent every day but when placed at Tackle, struggled. A better guard in the pros.

3. Ricky Wagner Wisconsin - He had a good Day 2 and Day 3. Wagner went 2 and 2 versus DEs Datone Jones and Alex Okafor.

DL

1. Datone Jones UCLA - The star of the defense. He showed both the speed and power moves at both DE and DT. Also got the only rare wins off of Fisher and Wagner.

2. Alex Okafor Texas - Jones' partner in crime. He also had one of the rare wins vs Fisher. Okafor is the most consistent pass rusher with the most moves.

3. Kawann Short Purdue/Brandon Williams Missouri Southern - Both showed well in every practice.

DB

1. Desmond Trufant Washington - Trufant showed the world why he might challenge DeMarcus Milliner as the top corner in the country. He was the clear best DB on either team.

2. Jordan Poyer Oregon State - Poyer had a good week as well. He's very physical when in press and showed minor flaws when in off coverage.

3. TJ McDonald USC - He's an intriguing one that had a good week that tape made all the more confusing. I'll have more on him later.

4. Duke Williams Nevada / Phillip Thomas Fresno State - These two were close to each other all week. Williams is better in the box while Thomas is better in coverage. Thomas needs to correct his tendency to drift but he has great recovery speed.

Team South

QB

1. Tyler Wilson Arkansas - Wilson had the best week of the 3. He has proven that a team wide disaster in 2012 was a fluke and returned to one of the best QBs in the country form. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes in the top half of the first round.

2. EJ Manuel Florida State - Manuel continually improved from Day 1. This week was very crucial week for him as he was very inconsistent in 2012. Some of that showed in practices. He's pro ready after digesting Jimbo Fisher's NFL style complex playbook. The most intriguing prospect of the 6 as he has the size (6'4 230) and speed (4.6) to make defenses think ala Colin Kaepernick.

3. Landry Jones Oklahoma - Heisman pretender Landry Jones showed up for the most part instead of the 2011 version. He seemed way too scared like Blaine Gabbert when things went wrong in the pocket during team drills.

WR

1. Terrance Williams Baylor - In a deep South WR corps, Williams turned out to the best. He's shown excellent breakaway speed on deep routes and good range on intermediate routes.

2. Quinton Patton La Tech - Patton has impressed everyone in all practices. He's a very intriguing prospect despite coming from a small school and a pass happy Sonny Dykes (one of Mike Leach's Texas Tech proteges) system.

3. Tavarres King Georgia - King is the most polished route runner of the three. He came in shorter than listed but has impressed with his routes and good speed.

4. Cobi Hamilton Arkansas - Along with teammate Wilson, showed everyone that Arkansas had a disastrous 2012 and improved his stock a lot because of it.

OL

1. Larry Warford Kentucky - The star of the South OL that manhandled everyone that showed in his path. He's a beast.

2. Lane Johnson Oklahoma - Johnson stole the show with his ability at both LT and RT.

3. Brian Schwenke Cal - Schwenke surprised many a scout. He had difficulty stopping bull rushes and is more comfortable at Center instead of Guard.

DL

The Georgia boys, Cornelius Washington and John Jenkins had great weeks along with LSU's Lavar Edwards.

DB

None really stood out except SDSU CB Leon McFadden. Robert Lester, Baccari Rambo, Sanders Commings all lowered their stocks by either getting hurt or being limited in pass coverage drills. Georgia Southern S JJ Wilcox is raw but the ability is there to be mined.
