With the fourteenth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft the Carolina Panthers select Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri.
Next we address the #15 pick in the draft - The New Orleans Saints are on the clock.
#15 New Orleans Saints. Needs - NT, DE, CB. The Saints were historically bad on defense in 2012, giving up an astounding 440 yards per game. They were last in the NFL in rushing yards allowed and in average yards allowed per carry (5.2), They finished 31st against the pass, and 31st in scoring defense, surrendering an atrocious 28.4 points per game. New Orleans couldn't get to the opposing QB either, tying for 25th in the NFL by collecting only 30 sacks on the year. The only positive on defense was the 26 takeaways they managed, good for 12th in the League. The other side of the ball was a different story. The Saints had the #1 passing offense, ranked 3rd in scoring (28.8 pts./game), and allowed fewer sacks (26) than all but the Giants (20) and Broncos (21). The running game finished a disappointing 25th in rushing yards, but that was due more to the fact the Saints had to play from behind nearly every game and throw the ball like crazy because their defense couldn't stop anybody. Their running game was effective, as evidenced by the fact that they averaged a respectable 4.3 yards per carry, it just couldn't be utilized fully because of the horrible play by the defense. Obviously the Saints need to improve their defense. Firing Spags was a good start. HC Sean Payton announced they are switching to a 3-4 defense this off-season. They need help along the D-line, most notably at NT, but also at DE. They need help at CB too. A playmaker at Safety couldn't hurt. Someone like Dion Jordan, who can line up as an OLB in the 3-4 could be attractive here. So which way do they go?
