With the thirteenth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Johnthan Banks, CB, Miss. St.
Next we address the #14 pick in the draft - The Carolina Panthers are on the clock.
#14 Carolina Panthers. Needs - CB, DT, S. The Panthers are one of those teams that may be poised for a break-out season in 2013. They finished 2012 on a positive note, winning their last four games, including a beat-down of Atlanta and a win in New Orleans to close out the season. Carolina swept the Saints, and came within a last second field goal of sweeping the Falcons. The Panthers lost seven games by 6 points or less, three of those losses coming on the final play of the game. Breakdowns in their secondary cost them dearly late in those games. Overall the Carolina defense fared pretty well, finishing 13th against the pass and 14th versus the run. They ranked 9th in sacks, collecting 39 on the year. The Panthers ranked in the lower half of the NFL in points allowed, however, giving up almost 23 points per game. They were also poor when it came to causing turnovers, specifically INTs, of which they only managed 11 for the year. Cam Newton and the offense improved as the season went on, but it was a mediocre year for that side of the ball. Newton finished with 19 TD passes against 12 INTs. The offense finished ranked 18th in scoring (22.3 pts./game), 16th in passing, and 9th in rushing thanks to over 700 yards on the ground from Newton. Newton was sacked 36 times in 2012, which ranked 15th in the NFL. Steve Smith looks like a shell of his former self, and the other WRs haven't shown much. The secondary lacks playmakers, and the Panthers have been in need of an upgade at DT for a long time. Which area do they address with this pick?
