Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas is one of the more popular early first round options for many mock drafts at this point. Will he be able to keep his stock as high all year? (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)
Georgia Tech at #16 Virginia Tech (8 p.m., ESPN) - MTD Watch Notes
While Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas will be the headliner all year for the Hokies (and the focus of NFL Draft fans), Rams fans will want to spend more time looking at his defensive teammates. The linebacking crew, led by MLB Bruce Taylor, includes OLBs Tariq Edwards and Jeron Gouveia-Winslow. Both should be on your radar. Antoine Exum is an interesting prospect as well; he spent his first two years at free safety and rover. This year, the Hokies have moved him to cornerback, so NFL teams will be able to get a good sense of his cover skills. The defensive line is a strength as well.
For Georgia Tech, it's a bit thinner. The offense is a bit too wonky to get a good sense of NFL skill sets...unless you want the Rams to switch to a triple option scheme. It is enjoyable to watch if you like running game theory. Omoregie Uzzi, the Jackets' massive guard, is my only draftable player on that side of the ball right now. Defensively, there are a number of prospects worth tracking. OLB Jeremiah Attaochu is one of my favorite prospects in the country. Their defensive line is going to provide some depth at the NFL level.
Should be a fun game to watch, though I expect Virginia Tech to take this one relatively easily. That gives us Pittsburgh-Cincinnati on Thursday, Utah-Utah St. on Friday, and a soft week 2 Saturday. College be damned, though; Dallas-NY Giants on Wednesday...
