St. Louis Rams Training Camp Preview: Cornerbacks

Stay connected for news and updates

Rookie CB Janoris Jenkins will likely carry more immediate pressure to perform than some corners who were drafted earlier in the 2012 NFL Draft. (Jeff Curry-US PRESSWIRE)

We're rolling through the camp position previews. Today, I'm turning the page to cornerbacks. The depth chart at CB is a bit messy; perhaps, that makes it a depth shart. There's been significant turnover at the position as just three of the corners coming to camp were on the 2011 Rams.

Hopefully, the Rams' defensive ends should continue to pressure quarterbacks. If the Rams find increased pressure this year, that should give the cornerbacks some cushion to be able to focus on covering early. With the physicality of this group, that's a good thing.

After the jump, the position depth chart and some thoughts.

Name Yr Ht Wt
Kendric Burney 1 5'9" 190
Jeremy Caldwell R 5'9" 183
Cortland Finnegan 7 5'10" 188
Bradley Fletcher 4 6'0" 200
Josh Gordy 2 5'11" 195
Janoris Jenkins R 5'10" 193
Trumaine Johnson R 6'2" 204
Jerome Murphy 2 6'0" 200
Quinton Pointer R 5'9" 195

- The first thing that pops out among the group is the inexperience. There's Finnegan as the seasoned vet, Bradley Fletcher who is listed as a fourth-year player whose injuries really have only given him just more than a season and a half of experience, and a bunch of youngsters.

- I think the real question is how this group is filtered into which specific CB position is going to be interesting to keep up with. Who's going to play the nickel out of this group? Jerome Murphy? And after Finnegan, how does the outside corner spot hierarchy shake out?

- Trumaine Johnson is nearly a half-foot taller than some of these guys. Is he indeed headed to the back of the secondary as a safety?

How do you guys see this group shaking out? Obviously, Finnegan and the drafted duo of Jenkins and Johnson have a leg up over BFB and Jerome Murphy; that's part and parcel of a coaching staff and front office shake up. Ho do things play out this preseason and what changes over the course of the regular season?
