Several St. Louis Rams' Players Swapping Jersey Numbers

Stay connected for news and updates

Steve Smith got his old number back with the St. Louis Rams.

Update your notes, or just buy a new media guide when the time comes. Several players from the St. Louis Rams have changed their jersey numbers.

We noted Jason Smith's number change a while back. The Rams right tackle will now be sporting No. 72, giving up his old No. 77 for a fresh start to turn around a bumpy career. Joe Long, a UDFA competing to be a backup tackle, now has Smith's old number.

Veteran wide receiver Steve Smith claimed No. 12. As a result, quarterback Tom Brandstater switched to No. 5. Newly added tight end Brody Eldrigde took over No. 81, forcing Mike McNeil to go with 89. Josh Gordy switched from 38 to 25. Safety Rodney McLeod has Gordy's old digits, according to CBS.

Established veterans can usually pry their preferred numbers off of rookies, as is the case with Steve Smith and Brody Eldridge. Interestingly enough, neither or those players are locks to make the roster.
