A Second Round Option

Stay connected for news and updates

Well the first round is in the books, and I'm very happy with what the Rams accomplished. And looking through the second round talent, I wonder if it would be a good thing for us to potentially take 2 OLBs in the 2nd round this year. The option of picking up 2 receivers was discussed vigorously here the other day, and I think that OLB is an even larger need this offseason than WR, so let's take a look at what is out there.

First of all, I very much hope that our team goes WR with the 33 pick to kick things off tomorrow. There are a couple of guys there (in Jeffery and Hill) that I'd very much like for us to pick up (sorry, not sold on Randle) that I don't believe will be there at 39; due to who is picking after us (Baltimore, Cleveland, and possibly Denver could all be going WR). However, at 39 and 45 there could be some exciting options for us at the OLB position.

Lavonte David - This guy has moved up the big board to being perhaps the top 4-3 OLB in the draft. He's been mocked to the Bucs recently, but the Bucs no longer have that pick... Therefore, he could easily be there at 39, and I believe he would be an instant impact player for the Rams.

Zach Brown - A phenomenal athlete. There are lots of question marks with this guy, but he ABSOLUTELY has tremendous upside that is undeniable. A lot of teams are scared to take him for his potential to be a bust; however, in this scenario I think he would be in an environment to absolutely thrive. He has the ability to be truly great in the open field, but could struggle taking on blockers. Our defensive line happens to be quite formidable, and our other two LBs would be solid. So the potential for Brown to succeed in our system would be great; allowing him to play to his strengths while our coaching staff develops him to refine his weaknesses. Also, if he did turn out to be a bust, we at least have one of our OLB positions solidified and aren't putting all of our eggs in his basket.

Now I'm aware that there should be some good OLB prospects at the top of round 3, but this seems as though it would be a wonderful situation for us. I'm also aware that we could grab a player like Janoris Jenkins or a good offensive linemen. I'm just posting this to open up thinking about it, and see what you guys think...
