As I sit here trying to focus on work, I can't help but think about the draft tonight. For Rams fans, the draft is our Stanley Cup, our Super Bowl, our World Series all rolled into one. We eagerly await the little card being handed to Roger to announce the pick. Some of us even have draft parties, where we eat 7 layer dip and guzzle brew while following the draft's every move via twitter, Facebook, and NFL Network.
How can I possibly get anything accomplished when all I can think about is the Shock Top icing down in the fridge next to the taco dip and deer sausage?!? I play little games with myself, like the Tab game. On the PC I have TST open, ESPN, and NFL.com, along with all the websites I use for my job. I also have a few PowerPoint documents, Excell, and Word docs floating around on the screen. The tab game works like this: For every 20 minutes of work I "reward" myself with 5 minutes of perusing the various interwebs and tweets from the draft. Sometimes I can make it the full 20 minutes, other times I might as well have phoned in sick.
Part of my day is getting out in the community and talking with local leaders, officials, faculty, staff, ect. Today I'll be out and about for about 4 hours. During that time, my trusty droid is in my hands almost every few minutes, burning through the battery charge. Thank the lord for car chargers today. I can't wait to load those clips of Radio City from NFL.com, or check my SBNation app for Ryan's latest news and bits from New York City. It doesn't help that I work in an office where the words football and NFL are spoken with the reverence reserved for the passing of the Pope or Ronald Reagan. Religious, feverant praying abounds around the workplace, as we all compare notes and tout sources that come from God knows where, going for the One Up on each other.
Memories come flooding back to me from past drafts, such as when Brady "Bust" Quinn was so highly touted, and yet he sat around in the green room for what seemed like an eternity till the Browns came back up and got him. Or when Peyton Manning went #1 and everyone knew he was the real deal. Thinking of who the Rams will draft, I try to imagine if we will have a boom or bust with our pick tonight. Will we take a flyer on Blackmon and have him be another Donnie Avery? Or will we reeeeaaaaaccccchhhhh with our pick and snag Poe and watch him make Pro Bowls for the next 10 years? Who knows? Who knows? Surely I can check my tabs on the PC or load more SBNation articles and find out?!?
Well damn it! I guess I'll just have to wait till this work day is over, plop myself in front of the flat screen with a cold one and find out tonight along with everyone else. Cause at the end of the day, the only people who know the picks are sitting miles away, locked in a room that we have no access to other than the NFL War Room cams shoddy live feed.
Here's hoping you guys can get some work done today! Go Rams!
