Today, Jim Irsay suggested that any team interested in drafting Ryan Tannehill should seriously consider trading with the Vikings in order to move up to #3 overall. This could be the move that solidifies the Rams draft! Allow me to explain...
If Tannehill comes off the board at pick three, this allows for several legitimate possibilities:
- Possibility One: USC OT Matt Kahlil falls. If Tannehill goes at #3, this only leaves the Cleveland Browns and the Tampa Bay Buccanneers trading ahead of us. Cleveland has a franchise left tackle in Joe Thomas and will surely look to other positions with that pick. Tampa has invested serious capital into their offensive line this off season so it would be a hard to imagine them not looking to fix up other areas on their team. The Rams would have a serious shot at landing the player they likely would have picked at #2. Of course, there is always the chance that a team trades up to snag him before us.
- Possibility Two: Rams select one of the Tremendous Three. No disrespect to Justin Blackmon, but Trent Richardson, Matt Kahlil, and Morris Claiborne are considered the best non-QB players in the 2012 draft. If Tannehill goes at three, one of these studs falls into their lap.
- Possibility Three: Rams Trade Down. If one of the players mentioned above tumbles to #6. The Rams have a much better shot at trading down again. It isn't tough to imagine a team jumping up the draft board to grab a falling blue chip player while they still have the chance. (ie. Julio Jones 2011)
- Possibility Four: Rams Create Confidence. If one of the blue chip players is available and the Rams pass for Justin Blackmon or Michael Floyd, this sends a clear message that the Rams believe in the prospect. Les Snead and Jeff Fisher have done their homework and have been bringing every player they can find in for pre-draft visits.
