After seeing that he had a pretty positive pro day, I decided to finally watch the tape on Blackmon to see what all the hype is really about and I must admit I was pretty wowed. I also saw some of the negatives that people have talked about, but what really got me going was all of the intangibles and tenacity that he has.
First of all, his route adjustments were amazing. He turned some poorly thrown balls into some great plays. Also, his hands are great. He might have a few bad drops in his first few weeks with whatever team he's drafted to, but he's gonna make big catches when it counts. Thirdly, I liked the way he uses his body to shield off defenders. His speed is also something that is "good enough" when you combine it with his intelligence. Getting open, over the top or otherwise, isn't as much about straight-line speed as it is being shifty and selling the move that you're countering. Justin Blackmon does that VERY well. Finally, his tenacity is something that breeds winning, and something that I believe Jeff Fischer and the rest of our FO will fall in love with. He works extremely hard, and is going to find a way to get things done.
Disclaimer: If Claiborne is still there when the Rams draft, we NEED to take him... However, if he isn't, I now feel like Blackmon is a good choice. Also, Blackmon won't immediately solve our passing woes in the 2012-2013 season, but he's a great piece to have in place. Combine him with a speedster like Kendall Wright, or more realistically, Robert Woods or, idealistically, Sammy Watkins in a couple of years, and our passing game can be great.
