Rams sign WR Steve Smith

I am not sure how I feel about the Rams signing Steve Smith. I know he was one year removed from microfracture surgery, but he was very ineffective last year as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. Will the Rams plan to use him a lot next year? Will he even make the roster?

Steve Smith did have a great year in 2009 when he caught 107 balls for 1,220 yards and 7 touchdowns, good for his only Pro Bowl selection.

I like the idea of giving him a shot because the Rams are in desperate need of someone to make a difference at the wide receiver position. But Steve Smith was best in New York when he was working out of the slot. We currently have Danny Amendola, Greg Salas, and Austin Pettis on the roster, who all worked out of the slot last season. Amendola is a restricted free agent but I expect them to bring him back. I know Salas and Pettis have the ability to play outside, but this signing gives the Rams too many #3 and #4 wide receivers. We need a #1 receiver.

Are we going to let him play over second year players in Salas and Pettis? Just before Salas broke his fibula in week 9, he was starting to show some promise. Pettis also showed a few flashes down the stretch before he was suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs. We don't want to slow down the development of these two youngsters do we?

I know most will see this signing as a very low risk move, as he only received a one-year deal, but I still am not sure how much I like it. I hope it will work out well for the Rams, but I just don't see it as any type of solution to our continuous problem at wideout.
