Now that the first wave of free agents are pretty much snapped up (and yet Justin King remains unsigned!) I thought I'd make a little breakdown of some of the more intriguing and less headline-grabbing options out on the street that the Rams might look at. None of these guys would necessarily be starters but one or two could do a job for us and it shows that there is some (lesser) talent out there.
I've taken a look at each position below:
Kevin O'Connell. Played some back up for Mark Sanchez last season so knows a little of our new offence. I wouldn't trust him to start a game though!
Billy Volek. Was once a starting QB for Jeff Fisher in Tennessee. Could help Sam with his new Head Coach.
Michael Bush. That he's still on the shelf shows how weak the market is for running backs. Never going to be a game changer but could be a solid 2 or 3 back.
Thomas Jones. Just a solid, hard rushing player. Great leader too.
Ahmard Hall. I definitely think we’ll have a new fullback this year, both Fisher and Shotty used them well in the past although I expect we’ll draft one to grind into the ground. Hall was a trusted FB for Fisher and a big part of Chris Johnson’s success.
Tony Fiammetta. Was once drafted in the 4th round (impressive for his position) and is still only 25. Had a good year with the Cowboys when he got on the field.
Braylon Edwards. Has the talent to be top level receiver but is compromised by his talent for low level misdemeanours and DUIs. Watch for him though as he did work well under Schotty while in New York.
Patrick Crayton. Just a slot receiver. But a good cheap one. He is what Austin Pettis needs to be.
Jacob Tamme. Okay maybe 2010 was a lucky year, Manning was his qb and he managed to stay healthy. But maybe he’s actually good. No?
Jeremy Shockey. Not exactly a guy you want to speak at your graduation but he is productive. Fisher like strong personalities and he does have two Super Bowl rings.
Jake Scott. Fisher snapped him up last time he was a free agent and he has never missed a game for the Titans since. A great, underrated, grinder of an OG.
Geoff Schwartz. He’ll probably get picked up soon but is a hard working right tackle who has suffered through some bad teams in Carolina (which makes him perfect for the Rams!)
Anthony Adams. Was recently cut by the Bears as he slipped down the depth chart at DT. Could be a useful stop gap solution. Also a pretty classy and hilarious guy (He said about the lack of shock at getting cut "It wasn’t like I was on Space Mountian and my phone started going off".)
Derek Landri. Undersized DT but has been super effective when given the chance. He could only play on a 4-3 D so the market might lead him to the Rams.
Erin Henderson. Weak side LB who got banned for drugs in 2010 but had a really good last season. He sets the edge well against the run.
Manny Lawson. It sucks to consider a 49ers cast off but he is very good against the running game and is an athletic freak.
Gary Guyton. (Yeah I have 3 OLBs because we need as many as possible!) A situational OLB for the Patriots he was very productive when he got the chance. Was the quickest Linebacker in the 2008 draft.
Chris Carr. No cornerback left on the market is without flaws. Carr is a good nickel back who just got too expensive for the Ravens who had the forethought to draft his replacement, Jimmy Smith, last year so they could cut him (Oh to have a responsible front office).
Leigh Torrence. Was a trusted depth CB for Gregg Williams in New Orleans.
Chris Hope. Again the cupboard is bare for safeties but Chris Hope was a key component of many a Fisher defence in Tennessee.
Jim Leonhard. Very talented and super smart so would be a great addition but is coming off another big injury and probably won’t be ready to go during preseason or perhaps the first few games. Would be a huge gamble.
Thanks for reading! Hopefully we can just get better.
