We all know the current needs of this team. WR, CB, DT, LT (or even a C) in no particular order. For the most part I'm of the opinion that the Rams draft the BPA at #6 based on these needs. Free agency obviously will change things as well. We know the front office is going to be busy.
Most mock drafts seem to suggest that Cleveland takes Blackmon, and Tampa Bay takes Claiborne. The most talented player available would be Trent Richardson despite the lack of immediate need. No one around here seems particularly sold on Brockers or Reiff at #6 either. That puts the Rams in a tough spot.
Clearing lots of cap space could theoretically make room for free agents like Finnegan, Jones, and a player like Meachem/Garcon/Colston. In a perfect world we could fill a lot of these needs through free agency. But I think what we're forgetting here is that the Rams have 5 first round picks and 4 second round picks between 2012-2014. Why should we reach for a player like Reiff or Brockers if we aren't completely happy with that player? Realistically this team should be peaking by 2014/2015. Can we really expect Steven Jackson to be on this team at that point?
As fans I realize we want to see this team do as well as it possibly can right away but what if we are actually passing on the best running back since Adrian Peterson? I'm of the opinion that with the first of these 9 early picks over the next 3 years we ought to select the best player available. And furthermore, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility to use both of our early 2nd round picks to move up and get an impact DT or OT.
