With The NFL officially opening for business today; I decided to look back at a few FA's and the amount they were paid last year. I definately would not stop looking to add additional FA's; I wanted to identify three likely candidates as a barometer for what The Rams may be able to afford in free agency. With the release of several players; The Rams have added more cap space . Appx 16-20 mil.
One option is to sgn a veteran OG like Carl Nicks, who's signing may leave little if any room for additional players. My choice would be to sign multiple players that can step in as starters. After the jump I will list the players and there 2011 salaries.
2011 Salary On Each
Manny Lawson: $3,000,000
Robert Meachem: $ 2,260,000
Mike Tolbert: $1,835,000
I have no idea what their asking price for 2012 will be. What I do think; is that The Rams can get all three for a reasonable price. I also think that The Rams should consider DT Amobi Okoy'e from Chicago. He iis 25 years old and is a talented player. He recorded four sacks last year for Chicago. Houston drafted him at age 19. The Texans placed him at NT in the 4-3; his natural position is the 3 -Tech. He only signed a one year deal with Chicago who may need all their cap space to attempt to sign Mario Wiliams. CB Tracy Porter from New Orleans had a down 2011, but he is still a very good CB who will come at a reasonable cost.
With a projected salary cap of 20 mil; the following players should be considered and signed; IMO:
1. Robert Meachem
2. Manny Lawson
3. Mike Tolbert
4. Amobi Okoy'e
5. Tracy Porter
6. Braylon Edwards ( If Healthy ) A Wildcard who could pay dividends for the league veteran minimum salary.
If The Rams can afford it; should they sign all these players?
Yes. These players would fill a lot of needs. (38 votes)
