Why We Must Draft Kalil

For the past couple of months, people have been debating over Kalil or Blackmon as our first round pick. It has started being called Bradford vs Suh 2.0. At that time, Suh was one of the best prospects available, but Sam Bradford who had injury issues was considered the best fit for need(if not for his shoulder injury, he would have been the best prospect). This year Kalil is the best prospect after Andrew Luck, while Justin Blackmon is the best fit for a team in desperate need for a quality no.1 wide reciever for a long time.

Kalil is undoubtly the best prospect and for that reason he wont drop below the 3 pick in the draft. Some teams may actually trade up to pick Kalil, it doesn't always have to be QB needy team that needs to trade up. Now lot of people argue that for years the Rams haven't addressed the need at wide reciever and its time they started. Justin Blackmon can be had by trading down with another team and we could still pick up Jonathan Martin. The problem is 1) Martin may not be a very good option at left tackle, producing another bust at the position. 2) Justin Blackmon is not a instant bonafide no.1 like A.J Green. He is still not going to have a big effect on opposing defenses until a couple of years in the league. The best option for the rams would to resign llyod who is a known commidity in the NFL and can teach our wrs at the same time as take the focus of the oppossing defense.

Right now, defense are happy to blitz us. Some people think that it is because our wide recievers don't demand attention. But what if its because the defense knows our line can't take the pressure. The defense just needs to show blitz and Sam Bradford would be ready to curl up in a fetal positon. Sam then focus more on the pass rush coming rather then were his recievers are. His throwing action has also messed up and is causing, someone, who was called one of the most accurate throwers ever, to throw wildly like a cat being chased by dogs.

This years draft there are a host of options, unlike last year draft where there were only two options. There is Alshon Jeffery, who to me seems like a bigger llyod, who catches the ball and trys to get a few YAC, My personal favorite, Dwight Jones, Mohammed Sanu, Kendall Wright, Juron Kriner(a healtier version of DX) or even Malcolm Floyd. We can always pick atleast one of these guys in the second round.

For those of you who want a bonafide no.1, wait till next year, where we can pick up Robert Woods or Keenan Allen, both of which are better then Blackmon. They both have the potential to be great No.1s. I would rather get one the best tackle prospects of the decade and one of the best wide reciever prospects of the decade next year, then get a medicore no.1 and one or two more picks, which we never know if they will end up becoming busts.

I agree, not only does it give pass protection, but helps the run game big time.

big thumbs up love the whole Fisher USC flavor Kalil is a always down field decleating LBs and DBs Woods plays like a man among boys. would love to trade philly a 7th for Stanley Havili dude does it all block, pick up the blitz, and catch the ball, and even run it for the tough yard and do it all with out putting the ball on the ground.

While I agree that Kalil is a strong choice, after examining the quality of the top 3 OTs...

… I honestly think that as the draft comes closer, the separation between Kalil, Reiff and Martin is going to all but disappear. That means that a trade up by a Top 10 pick team isn’t very likely. The bottom line is that it’s a great year to find O-Linemen. It’s why I’ve started to lean toward Blackmon with a high draft choice. The “Air Coryell” offense Schotty is bringing in will only work if we have great WRs. If we stand pat at #2 and take Blackmon, we definitely need to find sleeper OTs in the later rounds

by Douglas M on Feb 4, 2012 1:34 AM CST reply actions

But is it also possible

that the separation between Blackmon and other WR prospects might also close?

by mcihaelT on Feb 6, 2012 6:40 PM CST up reply actions

If we keep the pick, it HAS to be Kalil.

We’re set at that position for 10 years if we draft him.

i dont know why we cant take blackmon at 4

Martin at 22. Or if we trade with Washington then we can take rieff or if ar get lucky we can take blackmon.

Because, you do not own those picks! They are Clevelands and will stay Clevelands.

i agree aswell

and also why is pettis still a ram? PED isn’t that a red flag?

by joemammaz on Feb 4, 2012 9:24 AM CST reply actions

If he is...

my desire to find Devaney and punch him will reach a crescendo! I am not suggesting that it wouldn’t be in the interest of the team, but DAMN! Think of all the players the team could have drafted instead! And the wasted 4th rd pick the year before on another WR bust?!?! F*@K!!!

Yeah and that makes it so much worse

It seems like they were only helpful on punt returns

The team is so far away...yet so close...

I was all for Kalil earlier in the year once our season was pretty much over

But now, I think we have to get some weapons for Bradford. Like someone mentioned, I think that the gap between Kalil and some of the other OT"s won’t be that great come draft time, and we might be able to find a sleeper in the later rounds. Jeff Fisher’s supposed to be really great with lineman too right? Maybe he can kick Jason Smith and the others into the right direction.

I wonder what kind of witch doctor Fisher must be

for so many people to think he’s gonna be able to fix Smiths concussions. I guess I just don’t understand. Maybe they just go away because his head sees Fisher and it scares the concussions right the hell outta there.

fuck this shit

BLACKMON!!!!!! if i u didnt notice theres not exactly a plethora of wrs in the draft… after blackmon and floyd i really dont want anyone else except for if they were the number 2 reciever…. and if u wanna talk wishful thinking… garcon will stay with the colts… wayne wil leave… and wont be the same ol wayne…. bowe will stay welker will stay… fuck 30 yr old v jax… he most likely wil stay in san diego… all the good wr in free agency will most likely stay with there teams…. and in the draft there are plenty of good lineman after kalil as well as guards and tackles in free agency…. so im pretty much sayin the only place to get OUR GUY is pick number 2 or 4 of the first round of the 2012 nfl draft… so i say take blackmon… or trade down with cleveland

by ramat on Feb 4, 2012 9:20 PM CST reply actions

Blackmon is not a #1

There are 3 or 4 players I’d rather have ahead of Blackmon

Teams are winning SB's these days with average offensive lines

We need a decent vet at LT and a couple good draft prospects to cover Center and Guard. No need to spend our 1st pick on an OT. Better used for #1 WR or CB.

by JHaier on Feb 4, 2012 11:31 PM CST reply actions

overstatement^^^^^^

there is nothing average about either super bowl teams offensive lines.

by itsvon on Feb 6, 2012 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

To Ramat and JHaier

Yes, bradford needs playmakers, but they are of no use without a line to give him some time. Justin Blackmon is reciever who is better a fade route or other route that take some time to develop. Also both the teams in the superbowl, the patriots and giants have good lines with atleast one probowl player. the only good players we have are dahl and saffold.

by ramsfanindia on Feb 5, 2012 6:29 AM CST reply actions

You Have Stated A Great Case For Kalil

IMO; Saffold is fine at LOT in the WCO. McDaniels scheme of a vertical passing game required Saffold and the rest of the O-Line to hold blocks for longer periods time. A task that proved more daunting with receivers who had trouble getting open and securing the football (Lloyd was the exception).
Another concern is whether Lloyd will resign. I think he will but, alternate plans should be in place. I think The Rams would do well to trade back and pick up multiple picks, along with talented younger players as part of the compensation package.; even at the risk of losing out on Blackmon( My selection), or Kalil.
If I were to pick an O-Lineman with additional draft picks OT/OG Cordy Glenn and C Phillip Blake would be my choices. Great Post! Rec*

I read your whole argument.

You made many valid points and I laughed a at some . But your argument about teams blitzing us is really a question. Also your\ base your whole premise is the Rams taking either Kali or Blackmon;Who says Claiborne is not in the mix.? First off your premise is all wrong that a QB will be wanted at #2 and that the Rams need a tackle? * Hello*; if the Rams go for a position in the Fisher offense they will need 2 quality guards! End of argument.

The blitzing augment was for a different view

i believe that a wr will also help stop some of the blitzing, but at the moment, wr is nothing but a want compared to the need at OT. the green bays packers have a 7th round pick and fifth round pick playing for them(i think, not sure) and they were doing pretty well. Also we have one quality guard in harvy dahl. Jason smith could be a good pass blocking guard or we can find options later in the draft. Claiborne is a insane pick at 2. He is good, but not good enough to get the 2 overall pick. also cb is a low need on our roster. And QB like RG3 maybe in high demand, having people trade up to us.

by ramsfanindia on Feb 7, 2012 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

Wow, you guys are nuts. You are actually debating between a WR and a Rock Star (second coming of JoeThomas) LT? I’d take the LT every time, especially in this draft. There are a ton of WR’s in this draft and due to the cap hits this next season, probably a fair amount of free agent wide receivers.

There’s many here dreaming about getting Clevelands two 1st round picks for RGIII. Problem with that is he would get beat to hell in Cleveland due to the right side of the o line sucking badly, and no real WR’s to speak of, then the added bonus of having to spend probably 2 seasons learning the west coast offense. He’s not the right fit there, so the Browns will either trade down or sit pat on there picks, add impact talent on the O & D lines, WR, & LB, and play McCoy another season.

Either way, I like your pick of HC. The guy knows how to run an organization, and hopefully the ownwer will leave him alone and let him run it.

not to mention

if cleveland stands pat they get 2 first round picks to help fill some holes and they still get RG3 if the rams and vikings dont trade down.

drafting kalil

why is everyone so quick to dismiss saffold? had a great rookie year then was injured last year. we already have our left tackle of the future why waste another pick? we need receivers. sam had time to throw last year but no one could get open. go out and get jefferey or blackmon then call it day. add some line depth later in the draft. we need to grab some backers and corners or a strong d-tackle to shore up the run defense.
