Do We Have to Replace Saffold?
Saffold had an absolutely abysmal start to the 2012 season. In the first 4 games he gave up 6.5 sacks. However he's only credited with 2 in the next 5 games before he got hurt. The shortened preseason and the quality of our first four opponents, coupled with a new system could explain that. Our first four opponents were Philly, NYG, Baltimore, and Washington.
Philly was playing the wide nine, which the entire OL had probably never seen. The Giants basically got to and won a Superbowl based on the strength of their pass rush. Baltimore is always scary. Finally the 'skins, well he got Orakpoed, there's a commercial about it.
When you combine the strength of the defenses with the new system, a short preseason, and the lack of any receiver that could get open before we got Lloyd you basically have a recipe for disaster. If he's fully recovered from his injury maybe he is still capable and we don't have to reach for an OL early, unless he's the best player available. This time last year we were talking about how Saffold was probably the best pick of the 2010 draft, maybe Fisher can get him to play up to that potential again.

So do you take a chance of your franchise player having a bad line again?
Is that great man formally known as Tevin T. Broner, also I'm on twitter Follow @T_Bron
Regardless of what we do we're taking a chance of having a bad line
I think the real issue last season was poor strategy and coaching.
If an upgrade at LT is a possibility great but I don’t think Saffold is such a bad option that it would be dangerous to Sam to play him at LT.
He does need to be replaced,
he needs to be moved to the right side and put a better player left tackle.
I’m just saying we don’t have to reach for a LT. Were not gonna get a better one with our cap space in free agency. Anyone we draft is just as much as a gamble as Saffold, it’s not like they are constantly playing nfl caliber de’s in college.
That said if we can’t trade the second pick I take Kalil and don’t look back, he’s the best player available at that point imo. But if we trade down and we should, we don’t have to reach for Reiff at 4, though he might be the best available at 6 if we trade the ’skins. Offensive line is deep this year, we could get a RT in the second round most likely.
i agree
replacing saffold isnt the biggest need.
but, replacing smith is. and if you can find a better LT in the draft and move saffold (who can still be a great pick of the 2010 draft) to RT, it would make me even more confident in the OL. at the same time, i agree. no need to reach at 4 or 6 for reiff or martin if they arent the bpa. but the rams would still need to address RT at some point in the draft.
Well, looks as if you are counting chickens before they hatch. If you like to do that, then only start with the #6 pick, because you aren’t gonna see #4 & #22 with a Rams tagline next to it.
A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist....
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong!
My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch!
Once you start agreeing with TDSH, you know that you're wrong.
I was doing some thinking about this subject. I’m wondering how much of the issues were coaching rather than personnel. The large amount of problems that I saw were that we would get to second or third and long, due to drops and other teams crowding the line; or we would be losing badly enough that we would need to pass on the majority of downs, so the opposing teams pass rushers could get super aggressive.
Don't replace Saffold our RT, replace Smith our LT that never panned out.
Maybe Saffold was a great RT but not a LT.

The big problem is that if you give him a shot and he is the guy from the beginning of the season, not the guy from the latter half of the season, we have yet another season of Sam being owned and the Rams not being competitive.
It’s a really tough call, because he was a borderline pro bowler as a rookie at LT. Then last year he was below average. I do think there is something to be said for giving him another year and trying to fill huge holes
Run first team? Air Coryell Passing Offense?
Whichever way this team ends up building towards, we need to build it from the offensive line up. Saffold was good, I think he will be good this year, but I see no issue in adding ANOTHER good lineman.

Saffold
He is fine at LOT. IMO the new offensive scheme played a critical role in his setbacks. WCO or power; and Saffold will excel.
whys is everyone letting bradford off the hook?
like him and saffold had equally impressive rookie seasons and then equally unimpressive sophomore seasons. valdezy is right. the system made them both bad. there both great players in a proper system. stop giving up on saffold or saying move him to rt. if were gonna draft a new tackle let them both compete and then u go from there.
My perfect scenario is
Trade down with Cleveland and get both of their firsts then get Blackmon at 4 and Adams from OSU at #22. Let Saffold develop at the LT spot and put Adams in at RT. Then go Defense in the following 2 rounds with a RB in the 4th (Maybe Lamicheal James, although I think he’s moving up on draft boards).
Be careful who you can a child because if I'm a child you're a pedofile and I be damned if I stand here and get chewed out by a pervert..

I like your thoughts
but many say Adams will bust and fans of his team don’t really even like him. There’s got to be a better option out there than him. Anything you got to cheer me up on Adams?

My fears too
I just don’t think Blackmon is very far ahead of the rest of the receivers in the first round or early second. But the top 2-3 linemen outclass the rest of the field by a lot. So I’d be scared at this point to take anything other than Kalil or Reiff at the 4 spot at this point. Of course, the combine could change all of that very shortly here.

Well luckily we have good talent evaluators in our FO I believe
Plus from what I’ve heard he could be a pretty good RT just not a great LT., I watched some games of him and I was impressed. There’s big bust possibility with any 1st round pick, at the end of the day it’s about who you want and take that player..

It's really easy to see the scheme Mcd ran hurt our offense real bad.
I just think if someone(Saffold) was playing at probowl level at RT why not keep him there and find another probowler for LT instead of switching positions. It’s like why take a TE Smith and make him a LT? lol

earlier post...
had us trading down with the phins, they get #2 pick, we get jake long, their first round and second round pick, bump saffold to the right side and work on the offense…done deal
I can't see them giving up Long and those picks but
this would be great for us if it did happen.

holy crap that would be one hell of a good dream scenario
but mia officials would probably cough up their coffee and spit out lunch cracking up at the idea.

yeah, no way they give up their #1
from a few years ago, who is a proven NFL talent for a nontraditional QB pick. not only that, but they also give up this years 1st and 2nd? no way.
I think Saffold could be a viable LT
I’m just tired if us drafting in the trenches with early round picks and continuously doing it without paying attention to other positions. How do we know drafting Blackmon won’t work when we haven’t draft a viable 1 in how long?

Yea I kno trust me. Barron smith incognito . Pathetic
My issue tho is that our new offense its dependent on holding your blocks until receivers finish a route (like mcdaniels) and new york had the oline to do it but we don’t.

NO!
MChoodyjr set us back a year or so becasue his system didnt work. We drafted personel for his scheme and thats abut it. Boudreau is the new Oline coach and was in ATL the past few years. Boudreau was the guy that turned Dahl into the blocker he is now. We will be fine next year throwing slants, running the ball and taking a deep shot every so often. Mchoodyjr has an offese similar to Martz’s was back in the day. It takes a while for the routes to develope, but sam was throwing to undrafted players and was not being protected by Pace on his blind side.
I've come to the conclusion that alot of people dont know what the hell they are talking about
not to be mean although ya i realize that was a mean statement. But all these people saying saffold cant play LT but he’d be a great RT are confused and/or dont know what they are talking about as i said. If, as you guys say, Rodger cant play LT and he’s been playing LT his whole career what makes you think he would be a stellar RT. And what are these secrets credentials that LT’s have that RT’s dont have? I understand LT’s have to protect the blindside but thats not really a physical tool, i dunno, someone explain please.
LT have to stop the speed rushers and are usually better at pass blocking. RT stop the power rushers are are better run blockers.
As stated above why move a player that played great at RT but bad at LT in the NFL. Many players play LT their whole collage career but play RT their whole NFL career. 2 different leagues.
by jmo53 on Feb 21, 2012 1:27 PM CST via Android app up reply actions
and Saffold was a stellar RT his rookie year.
Not so much as a LT the next.

"RT his rookie yr"?
You sure about that?
by RadicalRamsFan on Feb 21, 2012 1:37 PM CST up reply actions
Not gunna lie I feel kinda dumb I thought he played RT the first year.
Guess I forgot Smith sucked so bad he got beat out by a rookie(or was it Smiths injuries?). Either way an upgrade at OT is badly needed. Did you all know Smith has started only half of the games since he’s been a Ram? I believe he has made over $1mil per start in his NFL career.
by jmo53 on Feb 21, 2012 6:42 PM CST via Android app up reply actions
I would like to see the Rams do well, but to think that the Browns will give up that much to move two spots is just plain stupid. The Cleveland picks are gonna stay Cleveland picks, unless someone makes them a really good offer to move back.

Idk
We could at least get the #4 and the #37, and that’s without much pressure from other teams trying to trade up. So depending on Griffin’s pro day and free agent QB signings, they might do #4 #22 and (maybe) 2013 2nd round
by CodyAllenFTW on Feb 21, 2012 11:06 PM CST up reply actions
I like your thinking
CLE has multiple picks and their #4 and 2nd round pick is still better than Kalil imo and maybe MIN picks Blackmon and Kalil is still available.
by jmo53 on Feb 21, 2012 11:27 PM CST via Android app up reply actions
Well
Minnesota won’t take Blackmon unless he has a crazy good combine/pro day. Their WR core isn’t quite as dismal as the Rams, but they could reaaaalllly use a good LT. The only other shot would be if they were to also trade down for someone who maybe wanted Trent Richardson or Blackmon. But I’m hoping that the pressure of Washington offering maybe the #6, #39, next year’s 1st and maybe a 3rd or 4th or something could push Cleveland into going #4, #22, and a next year 2nd through 4th rounder.
A healthy Saffold is fine at LOT
It is the other idiots I worry about on the line. So help me if we take another o lineman # 2 and move him to right tackle AGAIN I anm rooting for any AFC team.

Kali is not a Rams option
He is a USC gentleman blocker for the QB. Has no place on any smash mouth team. Give me Iowa;s Reilly instead if running the ball is next; Also some Wisconsin Guards would be nice.

Play Everyone
At the position they were drafted at. Then switch, swap, cut. This is not rocket science. All you need is a clue and deep pockets.

If Saffold can't snap longly or be a good tight end then we don't need him.
Anyone can play tackle just ask Jason Sm….well there’s Alex Bar…… What’s Orlando doing these days?
