Just look at the Rams roster for a minute and you will see a punter not named Donnie Jones. This punter is Robert Malone. Upon this discovery I said "Who the hell is Robert Malone?" He doesn't have a number and I don't even know if he is still on the team. Wikipedia (great source I know) says he's a free agent. Did we sign him? Is he on practice squad? What do the Rams plan to do with him? I don't know the answers to any of those questions, but I can provide some background info on the guy at the very least.
Robert Malone may be an awesome name but he is also a pretty good athlete (go ahead and laugh). In high school he wasn't just his team's punter but also played defensive end and tight end. As a tight end he averaged over 23 yards a catch and caught 6 touchdowns to go along with 13 tackles and 4.5 sacks as a defensive end. Malone is also the cousin of former USC punter Tom Malone.
In college Robert Malone played for the Fresno State Bulldogs. In 2008 he recorded a 74 yard punt against the Badgers and his performance in that game earned him WAC special team player of the week and was also selected to the academic all WAC team. Malone has bounced around throughout his NFL career most recently ending up with the Lions where he is most famous for kicking it to Devin Hester one time. Malone entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent.
Then here comes the complicated part. While researching Robert Malone I see that his SB nation profile shows that the latest transaction including him was him getting waived by the lions. Then I'm on Wikipedia and I look at his cousin Tom Malone's page and it says he is on the Rams Roster. Then I look at Tom Malone's profile on SB nation and it says the most recent transaction including him is that he was signed to the Rams. What?
So is this our Malone? Tom Malone was possibly the most popular college punter of all time. USC fans even started a "Malone4Heisman" campaign. Not much to say about him that you can't read on the picture above. For all his college success he hasn't had as much in the NFL. He went undrafted and has been on numerous practice squads and even been on prestigious teams such as the New York Sentinels and the Sacramento Mountain Lions.
I don't know why I made this post so here's a random poll.
