St. Louis Rams FA Options: John Abraham

18600d1298821677-falcons-looking-add-pass-rusher-compliment-de-1_nfl_g_jabraham_412_medium

via gridironfans.com

Free Agency begins March 13th, and in my opinion, it can’t get here fast enough. Major upgrades at Rams Park so far this year include General Manager Les Snead and head coach Jeff Fisher. I believe they have what it takes to bring a winning tradition to the St. Louis Rams franchise. I have no doubt that Fisher and Co. are patiently waiting for March 13th too. Thee Rams free agent additions will shape their draft plans in April.

It's really a shame that John Abraham isn’t ten years younger. With the transition of offenses to more high flying attacks, Abraham would be putting up pass rusher stats like no one else in the NFL. He would almost be guaranteed a HOF shrine. When he retires, I think he will still get some votes.

While DE isn't one of the most important positions the Rams need to address, you can't overlook what Abrahams knowledge would bring. He would be able to add to the already impressive talents of Chris Long, and could turn Robert Quinn into something phenomenal. Quinn has natural born pass rusher skills, so if he could learn from John Abraham's expertise in the craft… Well, to me, that's a match made in heaven.

Quite a few Rams fans will say he's too old. I completely understand, with the bad taste of Robbins, Bannan, and Muir still in our mouths. But Abraham has missed only two games in 5 years. That’s right, only missed two games while playing one of the toughest positions in the NFL! Having a rolling pass rusher that could be swapped in and out with Quinn and Long would keep them all healthier, and could really make a difference in close 4th quarter games. Also, let's not forget that Abraham was a Pro Bowler in 2010.

It seems Atlanta isn't willing to resign him at his current rate - $8 million per year. But with some "friends" like Les Snead, Paul Bordreau, and Harvey Dahl, who knows what could happen?

Would the addition of John Abrahams help Robert Quinn become a better DE?
Yes, and he'd be a great rotational third DE too

No, he just too old to help the Rams defense in any way.

When I went to find a pic of Abrahams, the Cricket player popped up, so… :-)

If he doesn't cost too much

then I’d absolutely bring him aboard.

As much as I like Hall as a player for his great work ethic, Abrahams would definiely be an upgrade.

I wonder what kind of $$$ it would take to sign him? I know we have other needs to address, but if we could swing it?

Hall is better

he can play multiple positions and be a threat anywhere

Hall is not better....

Hall is decent but isn’t on Abrahams level as a pass rusher…not even close

Double digits sacks two years ago

6 last year. And can play DT on rush downs. He’s a better backup, not better player. Better backup

Ahhh...gotcha

I love Hall but if you could get Abraham for decent money (which you probably can’t) then I would rather have him over Hall.

Abrahams is almost two years younger than Hall

Career stats for Hall: 63 Sacks, 16 Fumbles

Career Stats for Abrahams: 112 sacks, 36 fumbles – 3X All -Pro

I wouldn't be opposed to signing both

and drafting a late-round project to learn from them

Does our $10 mil in CAP room include the $3 mil teams can borrow from a future CAP year?

That's a good question.

I have no idea. My hope is that after cuts and factoring that three million in (if applicable), we’ll have around 20-23 mil. That might be stretching it, but that’s my hope lol.

You know what?

We need a community cap guru to educate themselves and us on these cap questions. I know Mike Deitrich knows some of this stuff but I don’t know if he has the time or energy to ascend to the lofty Guru level of capology. As we go year after year of performance shittitude and the resulting draft windfalls, we have accumulated quite a draft crowd in here. I’d do it but I don’t have the attention span to,…uh…..well….whatever it was we were talking about.

I would gladly find some time to read up on it and try to understand it.

Stats don't lie....

Abraham is definitely better

by Rcoon1307 on Feb 14, 2012 10:29 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

And while not the most pressing need...

I believe Fisher and Co. will be looking for upgrades not matter what position

by Rcoon1307 on Feb 14, 2012 10:31 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Unless he's running down the sidelines

jumping over defenders, and scoring double digit TD’s next season I don’t think any FA signee should be making $8mil per season

by DCRamFan on Feb 14, 2012 4:43 PM CST reply actions

I wish I could tell ya

but I don’t think we find ourselves in a position to be looking for backup DE’s when we don’t have starting quality players in other positions. Just my opinion

by DCRamFan on Feb 14, 2012 4:55 PM CST up reply actions

Certainly not before we get a couple other guys

But what the hell? Hall is a free agent. Would Abraham be much expensiver.

I like the idea if it's cheap, but how can it be?

if I were him, seeing as how his contract has gone up every year since 2006 (from 2mil – 8mil, with 12.5 up front) my ass would be on a beach somewhere

by DCRamFan on Feb 14, 2012 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah it's all about how much these guys get

We’re still not much of a destination that drives players to take a cut just to get a ring. So it’s probably spendier than Hall. We gotta go thru a coouple of seasons of developing players, some of which we’ll keep for cheap, and some of which we can develop then trade for additional picks. It’s gonna take a while to wash the stench off ourselves.

I voted no

I’m more in favor of getting younger at that position, not older. We already got one end in Hall who is on the last lap or two, why pick up someone else who is in the same boat? I think we need a new body in at that position, but I’ll pass on him.

by willEYEam on Feb 14, 2012 8:55 PM CST reply actions

This would make no sense

We already have 2 good DE’s. We need someone in the middle. I would rather save that money for Finnegan or someone else.

by Rcoon1307 on Feb 14, 2012 9:30 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Abraham, while he won't be cheap...

Could take Long and Quinn to ridiculous playing levels.

by Rcoon1307 on Feb 14, 2012 9:18 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Don't get me wrong guys....I would only advocate this if..

It didn’t get in the way of signing CB/DT/WR. Those are obviously the most important pickups for the Rams.

by Rcoon1307 on Feb 14, 2012 9:29 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I like John Abraham

But that would be stupid, That would be like signing Brian Urlacker. A complete waste of salary cap.

We have NO DT's.

And with TWO 1st round picks already in place at DE, people want to bring in yet another? Granted James Hall may age out this year and we have no depth, but 1st things first. We’ve got to have at least ONE really good DT. Bannan is barely adequate, if that good. We can’t rely on bad players like Scott, Ah You, Sims, etc. to backup the defensive line either.

by JHaier on Feb 15, 2012 11:06 AM CST reply actions

I don't think anyones happy with our DTs

We don’t have to fill out the roster in any order, as long as certain holes are filled prior to TC. By bringing in another DE, (Hall is a FA) we’re not deciding that our DTs are all good.

we never corrected the Carriker bungled draft pick

letting ryan pickett walk and mis-drafting Carriker a DE and moving him to DT was such blunder. We never corrected this mistake.
