St. Louis Rams: The Wide Receiving Free Agent Class
It feels to many of us true Rams fans that the receiving corp hasn't had a big play maker or a guy that can even catch the ball properly since the days of Issac Bruce and Torry Holt (minus the good year Danny Amendola had last year). Since it appears that the lloyal Brandon Lloyd will follow McDaniels to New England, what are the Rams to do this off-season with a deep free agent class?
The names that pop out in free agency are Vincent Jackson, Desean Jackson, Marques Colston, Pierre Garcon, Reggie Wayne and even Stevie Johnson. While our initial reaction is take Vincent or Desean Jackson I don't think its in the best interest of the Rams to choose either. The name that is attractive after all the hype settles in is Marques Colston and I'll tell you why.
Colston has been in the league a year less than Vincent but has put up bigger numbers in an offense where Drew Brees is known for spreading the ball around (Vincent did take off a majority of the 2010 season due to a contract dispute). Jackson only had to share the receiving spotlight with Antonio Gates. While we argue that Vincent is physically gifted standing at 6'5 and weighing in at 230; Colston is nearly identical in stature standing at 6'4 and weighing in at 225. When put under the magnifying glass the two are eerily similar. Except in price.
Desean Jackson is an enormous talent without a doubt. But at this point the Rams are trying to build from the ground up starting with good characters. For those of you who keep up with football you know Desean Jackson just took a whole year of football off because of his current contract situation. He purposely missed OTA, practice and team meetings; what kind of "team player" does that? If Desean is willing to disrespect the club that gave him his chance then there is no doubt he will do the same to the Rams. While he might be the best choice in terms of age and talent, he is not the best choice when it comes to building a classy franchise that will focus more on the football field rather than their wallets.
After highliting everything wrong with the other possibilities how about we focus on Colston. Some can argue that it is hard not to succeed in an offense where Drew Brees is the quarterback. But in that case you can also argue that Colston hasn't been given the opportunity to be a primary receiver in an offense. Leaving much to question about how productive can he be if put in that number one spot on a team. The man is staggering in physique and a humble player who can put up and shut up. To those who know him he is called the "The Quiet Storm" since he can tear things up under the radar. If the Rams do sign him it will be an exciting experience to see him catch passes from Sam Bradford and keep his spectators as silent as his ego.

Thanks for looking over the article.
Rather have DJax
Has everything that we need. Speed, can get separation and is a deep threat. Maybe on of the most electrifing players in the NFL. Plus he is one hell of a return man. If we can’t get him then Stevie Johnson..

No DJax for you!
Thats right, No Soup FOr YOU!
Philly placing Franchise tag on Djax. Agent wants 5 year 50 milliion. Doesn’t fit us. Unless we trade Smith, Robbins and some other dead weight.

Looking over the numbers
I’m not sure we can get Stevie or VJax. last years cap was 123.375.000 or 120.375.000 soft. we are at almost 121.000.000 so we owe about 625.000 in the future. this years cap is est. to be 124.000.000. So you can see, without purging or restructuring our beloved players HUGE contracts, like Bradfords deal, we ain’t got a dime to dance with first rate, grade A FA WRs. After looking at these numbers I say we cut, Jason Smith, Jason Brown, Fred Robbins, Jason Bell, Hall, AJ Feeley and Ron Bartell could save us somewhere around 34.2 million. And there are others I like to see go, but they don’t do much for the cap and we will need to fill that roster space. Around the league they say we need at least 5 mill to sign our drafted rookies and more if we have more picks than others( which hopefully we do w a trade of #2). So with 29 or 27 Million to spend, and now lots of roster spots to fill….top tier WR are Officially off the table, better draft Blackmon. I’m showing Lloyd was only 1,050,000 cap hit last year. What a deal….not sure how that happened. did we interview the GM for Denver? hahahaha Garcon is about all we could afford.

Another reason why we should get Blackmon

Realistically though..
He’s not changing uniforms
Been losing sleep over Rams football since 1999.
Steven Jackson is a beast, a legend, a HoFer and should be treated as such.

Realistically.
There is a good chance with the Saints needing to resign Drew Brees and Carl Nicks who both are top five players in their positions respectively.

Colston
Is more valuable to both the Saints and Drew Brees than Nicks, imo.

Doubt it.
The Saints have tons of talent at WR. Plus the Saints can’t operate unless their o-line does well (we saw what the Rams pass rush did to them) and Nicks is a top 5 guard.

The word is they are letting nicks go for colston
Would love either guy

Stevie Johnson
Youth (25), good size (6’2" 210), talent, and good speed (not D. Jax level but definitely fast).
One of the few guys in the league who gave Revis fits when they played.
I agree
Without Plaxico, signing those two would be a half assed attempt to resurrect our passing game. j/k
