Taking Blackmon or grabbing a Receiver in FA is a mistake.

The way i see it Receiver is not a need that needs to be addressed this season. When rebuilding a team you must work from the inside out, that is a trend that the Rams should follow. I know it is easy to get excited about bringing in a dynamic play maker, but those kind of players cant function without a solid base. The lines both Offensive and Defensive need to be solid all around before you can build the talent around it. I honestly believe our receivers are good enough to make us competitive. DX, Gibson, Clayton are all decent receivers with potential to be good under good coaching which i believe we have now. During our free agency our money is best spent filling the holes on our defense. Signing Finnegan, Griffin and Jason Jones from the Titans would fill some huge holes. Retaining Lloyd wont be possible he is headed for greener pastures in New England with McDaniels. In the Draft we need to address the Line. I wouldn't mind a trade with the Browns or Redskins, either way we would end up landing Reiff or Kalil (if we are lucky) and getting picks in return would be a big bonus. End of 1st Early second id love to see Fletcher Cox as our choice, that would make our D-Line formidable, young and scary for years to come. By getting Reiff or Kalil we could move Saffold over to Right Tackle, Jason Smith to Left Guard . That would give Bradford plenty of time to find his weapons who can and will get open when given enough time. If we take these steps rather then dropping money on Receivers who wont make an impact once they get paid (Look at Sidney Rice last year) or drafting overrated rookies like Blackmon who's success was a result of his offensive system and great QB play. He honestly is at best a 2nd round prospect. He is too short (6'1) and too slow (high 4.5 low 4.6) to be considered a elite receiver in the NFL. At best he will be a slow possesion guy like Anquan Boldin. If we are to take a Receiver lets wait till 3rd round and take a guy like Dwight Jones who has the Height and Size 6'3 225 and speed 4.4. But id rather stay away from this years receiver class. I hope to god we don't make the mistake of taking a 2nd round prospect at best at a position that dosen't need to be addressed as bad as our line. Please take the safe option and take an Offensive lineman in the 1st and build on the defense through the rest of the draft and free agency.. Look what that did for the 49ers in one season.

I shall "respectfully disagree" with what you say.

Wounded Knee and Gibson are decent receivers? Not from what I’ve seen.

49ers are a great example

Give me a legit weapon on the 9ers outside of Vernon Davis….and if you say Crabtree you must be joking. And im not saying Receiver isnt a need, im saying we have better thing to spend our money on then Blackmon or a free agent. i would have been happy to have either Green or Jones last year.

by sronk510 on Feb 12, 2012 9:35 PM CST reply actions

Vernon Davis gives the Niners one legitimate threat.

The Rams have no legitimate threats. We don’t have anyone who can beat their man and get open even semi-regularly. It’s time to stop saying “next year” and make the move to get the Rams a legitimate pass receiving threat.

by andyhawk on Feb 12, 2012 9:39 PM CST up reply actions

I dont disagree

Davis is a target, the difference between him and Blackmon is Davis is an absolute beast, worthy of his money and where he was taken in the draft. Blackmon isnt physically intimidating. His transition from college to pro will be very rough. Plus the Rams just cant miss out on a guy like Kalil or Reiff (who i believe is underrated).

by sronk510 on Feb 12, 2012 9:45 PM CST up reply actions

And how do you know this

And don’t give me because past receivers from the big 12 have failed because that’s not a valid point. Blackmon in all rights coming out of college shows the ability to get separation and catch the ball very well. He also shows the ability to make a 4-5 yard slant into a big gainer or td. How do you know his transition will be rough? Sam transitioned very well coming out of college, all of the worries that people show are assumptions and we won’t know until he plays in the NFL. And right now knowing what we do, he is worth the pick..

Our recievers are terrible

What games are you watching? I’m not going to deny the offensive line needs to be upgraded. Also, when is 6-1 too short? What is it with everyone falling in love with 6-5 recievers and thinking that is the norm? Holt and Bruce were both 6 foot, I guess they were too short too. Also, most recievers run 4.5s, Greg Jennings ran a 4.53 at his Pro Day, Larry Fitzgerald ran a 4.63 at the combine.

by nick-the-greek on Feb 12, 2012 9:46 PM CST reply actions

Besides my mistake of Jennings

Who ran anywhere from 4.42 to 4.48,thats my fault. Holt and Bruce are both listed at 6 foot, though Holt always looked a little bigger, maybe 6-1. I was making the point that not every reciever coming out in the draft is a once in a lifetime athlete like Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson.

by nick-the-greek on Feb 12, 2012 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

But most recievers 6'0 or smaller

Were fast as shit lol including holt

by Ram_Redemption on Feb 12, 2012 11:01 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

6 foot and smaller

Yeah usually, but there have been a few exceptions for guys. Steve Largent, Rod Smith, Reggie Wayne, Hines Ward come to mind as far as recievers with great careers. They just usually don’t get drafted high, because their measurables aren’t great.
I’m not one of those people who wants to draft Blackmon 2nd overall anyway. I see his ceiling for potential as a little bit better than Hakeem Nicks. Rather have Blackmon as late as Nicks was drafted, but that won’t happen.

by nick-the-greek on Feb 13, 2012 3:52 AM CST up reply actions

Nicely put

Thats why I dnt I dnt agree with blackmon at 2. Could he be an exception? Maybe, but I’m gonna follow the rule lol. blackmon another from ten down would be ideal

Man am i in the Minority

I knew my philosophy would be unpopular but im just a big believer in building from the inside out. If we don’t get lineman we wont have a QB to throw to the receivers all of you want.

That doesnt mean

We completely ignore the wr position considering we have one of the worst corps in the NFL..

we have a few worsts...

i understand the argument on both sides, however i believe that matt kalil is ready to come in out of college and make a huge impact. I’m not sure if I can say the same about blackmon, I know he is the best WR in the draft but is he the best player we can pick at the number 2 spot. LT and WR are both positions that need to be addressed and ignoring LT and blaming it on our past failed attempts to correct our deficiency is just as bad as saying “We always find a way to put off getting a valid passing threat.” Kalil has to be the pick.

What dont you like about Blackmon?

From everything I’ve seen (bowl game included) the dude is a baller. He has the fire to be successful and has the ability to do so. He’s a game changer as you saw in the ball game. Sure he’s not the ideal height but his skill set should make it to where he can adapt and play well.
Also yes, kudi is pretty nice, he’s my third fav Rapper behind Lupe and Eminem..

The offensive line does need to be upgraded

However the Rams have the worst WR corps in the league, although Chicago might challenge that. You need both.

I indeed have

I have,i live in the Seattle area so usually i only see those games when they play the Seachickens and on red zone, but when i watched them the passes Bradford got off all had to be early and before those receivers progressed in there routes enough thus not giving those receivers a chance to sow they are capable.

Seattle was second in the NFC in points allowed

They come at you so fast you can’t take a snap under center, take your drop and throw. It was take snap from center, take drop, now allude man about to bounce on you. Thats just the way the seachickens roll. Great D. Great pass rush.

In my opinion the Rams should grab Matt Kalil and solidify their offensive line. Then develop Greg Salas and Lance Kendricks. Danny Amendola is a beast that we’ve all forgotten about.

Blackmon is good, but not good enough for us at this point.

We need a #1 WR and JB lacks speed and quickness for us. The value just isn’t there, especially when compared to one of the top 2 OT’s, IMO.

Run for your life before the rest of tst sees this...o no... Im too late lol

I’m with you that we shouldnt draft a wide receiver this year and I an in favor of oline but if we dnt draft one we have to go hard to sign one.A big time one too. I stand by this tho… ALLLLLL OF OUR YOUNG RECEIVER’S (cept gibson..he sinks) HAVE BEEN GIVEN UP ON BEFORE THEY HAVE EVEN PLAYED A FULL SEASON.

by Ram_Redemption on Feb 12, 2012 10:55 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I agree that the combine doesn’t always lead to determining if a player has what we are looking for. Like Blackmon running a 4.6 40 time. There are also many other measuring sticks. Like the shuttle, broad jump and vertical. I always say, “If they were stellar in college, fast and powerful in their pads, and are smart, go with it.” I think the most successful recipe this offseason is going to be addressing all the needs in some way. No team is able to pick every player they’d like, nor are they able to cut every player that they’d like. I don’t see why the Rams can’t address both aspects and both sides of the ball through free agency and the draft. If the scouts think that Blackmon is a can’t miss type of player and perfer to fix this o line problem in free agency then I’m on board.

by TRexRam on Feb 12, 2012 11:48 PM CST reply actions

really? REALLY!?!

so Blackmons no good and at six feet one inch you say he too short, but you like six foot nothing Gibson and 5-10 clayton??? Also, DX had 10 games, 26 catches 431 yrd and 2 td, Gibson 15 games 36 catches 431 yrds and 1 td and mark had 2 games and 3 catches and 26 yrds. this is your “good enough” existing WR staff for Sam da Man Bradford!?! really? REALLY!?! Poor Sam Bradford, its gotta feel like a race horse that never gets to race.

Also, the Sidney Rice comment. get paid and don’t perform. This is a Not For Long league. No guaranteed contracts. I say look who was throwing to him. I have friends in Seattle and they claim Trav. Jax is crap. And they got a line! Lynch wasn’t running for his life, he was running for first downs and TDs. You really think Marshall Faulk enjoyed the trade to the Rams? From a Superbowl contending Indy team? NO WAY! But he was a professional, knew it was all business, and made the best of it. ,,,,,but……COME ON MAN!!!! Draft an early WR and buy a WR. WE NEED WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION (WMDs) baby….not maybe OT OG that might one day just work out. And the OT playing the G position experiment is over. We’ve hit dat dog for years and it just doesn’t work.

Not saying I disagree with you

But we gave never seen out current group of recievers have time to get open so we dunno that for sure. We know that when the oline did play well (at ny and gb for example) the side receivers play well. Last year our wide receivers ALL played decent under the west coast because the oline didn’t have to hold blocks. All im saying is we can’t assume they don’t get open.. If they never have time to run a route .

by Ram_Redemption on Feb 13, 2012 6:05 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

They were being single covered

All season and couldn’t create separation. How is that even kinda good? Once the defense double covered Lloyd the others couldn’t step up, this wr corps sucks..

But most plays the coveage didnt even matter because bradford was being flushed out of the pocket before the receivers could even get into a break

even with lloyd. He was effective but his catch rate was crap and he was targeted alot. I’m not saying our receivers are gold, but pinning this only on them is outrageous. Bradford threw for 3500 yards his rookie season, and brandon gibson and danny played big roles in that. If they got open in a WCO (which is dependent onreceivers getting open quickly) then I think they could get open with good blocking like they did vs. green bay and new york. Jmo tho

by Ram_Redemption on Feb 13, 2012 9:24 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Yea Llpyd was the only one that could

Get open consistently, Sam has NO confidence in these other wrs because they can’t get separation and catch consistently and even in a quick throw offense they still had drop issues. Need I remind you of the last game of Sams rookie year? DX going deep and drops an easy ball and plenty more drops to speak of..

Actually even when he had his record season

Everybody was still saying how bad this corps is, look back in the archieves. That’s why so many wanted Julio Jones (including me). This corps has had this problem for years and instead of getting a top receiver its been avoided and tried to be filled with FAs, trades and late round picks. Look where that’s got us..

I think the WR position needs to be addressed more then the OL in my opionion

any college WR core would be better then the Rams WR core. I am not just talking about not being able to get open I’m also talking about the dropped pass’s to say that the WR core is alright and doesn’t need to be addressed is like saying demon’s are holding hand’s in a field of roses with beer raining down and praising the lords name it just isn’t happening.

by Freewheeler2 on Feb 13, 2012 7:42 AM CST reply actions

I want to keep Bradford around

But that wont happen if we dont have blocking. In the NFL we gave up the most sacks this season, but i believe that is due to the injurys. I can understand getting a WR in the later rounds are picking up a cheap one through FA, but i dont want to see our high picks and money go to something that isnt as dire as a need as O-Lineman

by sronk510 on Feb 13, 2012 9:04 AM CST reply actions

Really, do we have to do this again this season?

Let me start by saying this, the NFL is a passing league. Without a top passing game you will not be a contender. Yeah I know the 49ers made the playoffs but, how long do you think they can put up 17 points and consistently win ball games? Mark my words; they will go after a QB either this year or next. Take a look at the top teams over the past 5 years and you will see the top passers leading those teams.
So with that being said, we need to give Bradford some targets immediately. Devaney & Spags have stunted his development and confidence enough that he may not recover. So A number one is to find out if he can play at the NFL level with talent at the skilled positions.
Another thing that I have noticed is that good QB play and a decent running game seems to make and offensive line look a lot better. Take for instance the Carolina Panthers. They started the same guys that were on the team in a miserable 2010 season and were considered one of the worst lines in pro football, yet this year they looked great. What changed? That’s right; they have a solid passer now and easily could have gone 11-5, if it weren’t for piss poor coaching decisions.
We may need a couple of guys on the o-line but they can be had via free agency or late in the draft. Our most glaring needs are WR and CB. Just wondering Spronk, is your real name Billy or Steve? You seem to want to further the previous regimes agenda. In a league were even a good defense will give up 25 pts against a solid passing game Devaney and Spags thought they could win by scoring 11 points. Nice to see a bunch of you have come around to getting some offensive weapons on this team. Last year it was Chopper and I and that was about it.

49ers? Ravens? bengals?

This is a passing league but running the ball and playing d (fishers words) is still a strong attack

by Ram_Redemption on Feb 13, 2012 9:33 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

I said the past 5 years. Meaning Colts, GB, Belichick, The Ginas and Dallas. Running the ball leaves you 14 points down at the half and no way to climb out of it. If Kaepernick is developing nicely, then yeah; the Whiners have thier guy. I thought Skelton and Kafka would be better developmental players though. I don’t care what Fisher says, if he can’t accept that the league has changed since 99’ we are in for a long 3 years. When two QB’s break the single season passing mark that stood for 28 years and a few more were gaining on it…..well. Fisher had better wake up, he is already starting to sound like Spags.

Great part about the 49ers having a miracle year with Singletarys players is....

1.. Singletary is still gone and Harbough will mess it up
2. Alex Smith fair year only makes them stay with him wayyyyyyy toooooooo longggggg. (he suks)
3. Teams with MO money will sign their top and mid level FAs.
4. Did I mention no WR. Yes V. Davis is an Animal. but he doesn’t play WR.
5. Gore old, banged up and tired. Lost a step.

2. Alex > Bradford, but will hopefully give way to Kaepernick in 2013.

I'll try to make it simple, since you're struggling

GM’s pick the players, not the coaches. The only player I know that Singletary pushed hard for was Taylor Mays and we traded him for a 7th rounder because he was useless as a safety.

Now, when I say “last year” – that means the current GM, Baalke, who is responsible for bringing in guys like Carlos Rogers, Aldon Smith and Kendall Hunter and letting go of some of the vets that the previous regime held on to.

Niners may lose some of their free agents, but we have a ton of cap room. It’s obvious that facts won’t get in your way, since you like to invent things such as the Kyle Williams comments.

Jackson is arguably slightly better than Gore, but the point is the Niners have an option for his successor. Neither Gore or Jackson are getting any younger. Do the Rams have a legit successor on the roster? Do they go RB in the early rounds this year? If you have any intelligent responses, feel free to share.

I’ll need a translator before I can comment on the rest of your drivel. It’s pretty pathetic that this made your night, but keep on pretending that some goon on the internet could actually make me angry.

Smith probably isn't a long term answer

He deserves another year, but if he doesn’t drastically improve, then Kaep deserves a shot. Kaep hasn’t played enough to judge anything. He moved the ball on the Bucs in garbage time and I only remember him playing one other game. Threw a great ball that was dropped and misfired on his 2nd attempt. Really limited, but we’ll see what Harbaugh can do with him.

The awesome part about all of the arguments, is that I think based on Fisher's History

SRONK510 will ultimately be right. Jeff fisher will not revive the GSOT. End of story. It is not his style, it is not his new O.C’s style and he has said in no uncertain terms that he will protect the quarterback and run the ball. That spells line. Blackmon is out of the picture. love him or hate him, he will be long gone before Fisher even thinks about a receiver. IF Fisher doesn’t address O-Line in the first, he will address a defensive position like D-Tackle or OLB. Hell, he might even go for Claiborne at CB with the 2nd overall pick! If I were placing odds on Fisher taking a receiver in the first 2 rounds, I would place it at roughly 20 to 1 against.

by David5264 on Feb 13, 2012 9:21 AM CST reply actions

This

Fisher will only need a wr to open up the run IMO. He won’t put priority on reciever (s) . This will be a defensive draft with olineman and a wr (if we dnt sign one). And if we adress those needs properly we will get another FA receiver or draft a wr like woods next year

by Ram_Redemption on Feb 13, 2012 9:36 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

We are 100% on the same page.

I think he would love to get a guy to stretch the field late. I think our tight ends are going to be getting a lot of work as well. I see Fisher building the offense in the same mold as the Cowboys with Aikman and Emmit. Run first with a huge line. Use a solid tight end to keep the LB’s honest and occasionally stretch the field. In order of importance it would have gone Aikman, Emmit, Novachek, Irvin then whoever was on the other side. I think Fishe envisions, Bradford, SJAX, Kendricks and Amendola in a similar type system. I would love to see Kendricks step up and perform like he did in the pre-season or better yet have Kendricks perform and UH OH stay healthy. Those two have the potential to be a handfull like Gronk and Hernandez for the Pats.

My only evidence right here

Look at the last 3 sb winners
Saints
Green Bay
Giants
All of these teams have a hell of a passing game, name me the last team that used the smash mouth and won a championship, steelers? It’s a passing league…

When our offense can actually score points. They can’t be expected to go all our when they’re continuously on the field after back to back to back 3 and outs because our offense is so stagnant..

The Giants won because of a great running game and defense.

The passing game kept teams honest, but the bread and butter was pounding the ball.

by David5264 on Feb 13, 2012 10:05 AM CST up reply actions

Main point of your comment

Passing game kept them honest! The defense couldn’t push up because they had treats on the outside that could keep the D honest. We don’t. Plus the Pats D sucked against the run so that was game planning..

by RG31 on Feb 13, 2012 10:07 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

My point is that it does not take a huge passing game to keep a defense honest.

It can be done with slot receivers and tight ends. It doesn’t require a high dollar head case to freeze safeties and keep linebackers from stacking the line. If Amendola and Uh Oh stayed healthy and Kendricks performed to his potential, I don’t think we would be having this discussion.

by David5264 on Feb 13, 2012 10:14 AM CST up reply actions

Yes we would

If your argument was correct the Pats would have won the Sb, but they didn’t. That game proved you need outside threats to be successful, I want this team to win SBs not just compete in the regular season and the last 3 years have proved you need outside threats to win SBs..

I complely disagree. If Welker doesn't drop a pass and

Gronkowski is 100% that is a different game. I also would be interested to see what the offense would have done with a running game like the Giants. The Patriots running game was non-existent in the SB.

by David5264 on Feb 13, 2012 10:27 AM CST up reply actions

I think our offense has a chance to be good

Given an outside threat on the other side of Lloyd ( if we resign him) and if not I think blackmon is a must. I think saffolds could be a decent LT and we could maybe get Adams in the late first if we did get both of Clevelands first or traded back up for RT. With you saying we dont need elite weapons we also don’t need a great line, just good enough to give Sam time and open holes for SJax. Just my opinion though.

I don't think our Offense is that far away either,

but I disagree on Saffold. I think Saffold will be a very good right tackle, but I don’t think I trust him with the blind side. I really wish I had a better feeling about our tackles, because I would I actually think David Decastro will be the best lineman in the draft, but I can’t justify a guard when we are so shaky at Tackle. As for Blackmon, I think we will just have to agree to a disagree. I’m not sold on him and you are. and I think we are both too stubborn to have our minds changed. As an Okie, I really WANT to be wrong. I would love to see him be a huge success and I would eat my words like a tasty steak, but I just don’t see it at this point. Maybe it is just too many years of being disappointed by OU and OSU skill guys in the NFL. As far as I am concerned, exactly 3 have ever lived up to the hype. AD, Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders.

by David5264 on Feb 13, 2012 11:12 AM CST up reply actions

I just want to see all those years of high draft picks

Of Linemen to pay off, not just go right back out and get yet another Linemen when our wr corps has been neglected for so many years.
You may be right about blackmon but I can’t just stub him in with the failures nor the successes, I want to see him progress as an individual and see how he plays. His skillset and fire for the game is what makes me think he can succeed. I may be wrong but right now I think he could be a great number 1.

It really doesn't take a huge passing game to open the run. Just enough to keep them from

stacking the line. Slot receivers and tight ends have been doing that all over the league…with out the price tag and ego of the “big time” receivers.

I agree that getting Blackmon could be a mistake, but getting a FA WR

is exactly what the Rams should do. Many guys out there who are young and can step in and be great playmakers.

nice post

i dont completely agree, but to an extent i do. i do agree that we shouldnt completely write off the current receiving corps. i mean, this is a group that laurent robinson couldnt cut it with and he seems to be an alright wr. give the rookies a full off season and give them all including the QB more for the play to develop and who knows what might happen.

also, i made the same comparison of boldin and blackmon.

by itsvon on Feb 13, 2012 11:53 AM CST reply actions

For one free agency should help clear out this debate a little.

I’m going to assume the Rams trade the pick, because I think we can all agree we need a hell of a lot more than just a player or two to be successful. But, for all intents and purposes, let’s say we trade with Cleveland or Washington and get the 4th or 6th pick. Then, we need to decide the answer to this question. Is there a bigger gap in talent from Reif or Kalil to the second round lineman than the gap between Blackmon and the second round receivers? I think there is. After Kalil, Reif, and maybe Adams OT looks pretty shaky. But after Blackmon in the second round either Floyd, Sanu, or Jeffrey is most likely going to be there. I think Blackmon is better, but not light years ahead of those guys. So my vote I guess is OT first and WR in the second.

Jeffrey

people are saying hes running a 4.88 40 now, thats not going to help his draft. but it just goes to show that so many of these projections and evaluations of players can change quickly in the coming weeks/months. that is why i would prefer the rams make the play for a FA wr first.

Jason Smith is a head slap away from retirement. that means Goldberg plays {starts} dont get me wrong I love that he is always ready to step in anywhere along the line. so we have to go OT first and hope Gibson does a L. Robinson for us. and Goldberg stays a backup.

No middle ground on Blackmon?

He’s got polish like Green, but not the height and not quite the speed. Watch him after he catches the ball—OMG. I have never seen a WR take the seam to the house like this guy. Yes, Weeden spins it like crazy and yes. Ok.St. ran 100 plays per game. But Blackmon is a TD machine and I have no problem using the #4 pick on him. If we get stuck at #2, I’m o.k. taking Kalil, who I prefer to Reiff. I believe Kalil is the illegitmate brother of Jake Long and will have an amazing 10 year plus career.

by JD70-79 on Feb 13, 2012 9:38 PM CST reply actions

Relax ..

Look where the Broncos got this year. There WR’s are just as bad as ours but their offensive line is the best in the NFL. Plus Tebow is a terrible throwing QB no matter what anyone says.

by SosaRams on Feb 14, 2012 9:20 PM CST reply actions

Taking logic to this kind of extreme is not rational

While there is a grain of truth in the idea that a good offensive line is an extremely important this does not in any way shape or form mean it has to be filled out as priority one at the expense of all other aspects of the team. My perspective is that you don’t have to ave all pro caliber offensive linemen to be successful. What you need is a cohesive unit of capable players that are well coached and execute. I’ll agree that if a great offensive lineman either via FA or the draft that we should seriously consider taking them but I’ll disagree that we make no major moves at WR. I’m of the mind that the objective is to put together a complete team that is competitive this year and not a team full of building blocks that will result in us picking in the top five in 2013. Without a legitimate WR threat Sam will continue to struggle regardless of the quality of protection he has. Granted improving the protection he has is equally as important but make no mistake to be successful the Rams need to be able to provide protection and offensive threats. I’m perfectly fine with whatever direction the Rams go to fill their needs wether that means signing a quality FA WR and drafting Kali or signing a few solid FA linemen and drafting Blackmon. Really the FA period will determine what we do with the draft and there is no magic formula to putting together a football team. It requires getting the players you need by any means necessary.
