Long time no talk to Ram fans. There has been hot debate on here about whether or not Sam will ever be an "elite" Quarterback or whether he can succeed with the Rams. I have taken an "apologist" side to it as most doubters would say because whether you like to admit it or not. Sam has played pretty serviceable this season and by most people opinion's, he has slowly but surely improved as the season has gone along. But lets face it, what if he doesn't satisfy the fan's needs of becoming elite this season, is he toast? .
There are two main reason why I believe Sam will at least have one more year to prove himself to this organization. The first reason would be because he is the main reason why Fisher came to the Rams. Lets be honest, Fisher saw the talent that he had and if he didn't then he would have stayed with the 2nd pick and picked RG3. I think Fisher is smart enough to know that he nor Sam is going to fix arguably the worst franchise in the NFL over the past half decade or so. Many people (including myself) predicted huge turnarounds for the Rams this season but that's homerism. If you took a step back and recognized all the factors you would have predicted this season to the T. Rookies starting at almost every key position basically tells you that the season will have plenty of trials and tribulations. You can't start rookies at all the position that we have and expect to win a lot of games when even their surroundings are below average at best. I believe Fisher pointed to this exact thing when he said earlier in the off season that he threw out Sam's ugly second year and mostly looked at his first season. So to Fisher, this is Sam's second season.
The second reason why I don't believe this season is do or die for Sam is because who would you draft if we let Sam go or traded him? Matt Barkley looks nothing like the promise and potential people awed about before the 2013 season. Barkley to me looks like an overrated West Coast Offense QB who will take some time to get used to an NFL offense. You might call Sam an overrated West Coast Offense QB but let me ask you this, if Sam had the talent Barkley has around him at USC, would you be struggling? I'll answer that with a simple, hell no. We have seen Sam succeed when the talent meets expectations like back at OU and some when he gets the time to get through his reads as a Ram. Now tell me, would you want Barkley as a Ram with the talent or lack there of?
Then comes Landry Jones who has been overrated since he tried to fill the shoes of Sam. Everyone knows that I'm an OU fan but if Landry Jones is picked in the top 10 he will be a bust. He doesn't show the intangibles that are needed at the next level nor does he play like it. He is placed in the best system possible at OU with a gang load of talent around him and he still doesn't take advantage of it, just like Barkley. I have compared him to Romo in a sense that he's supposed to be great and you're bombarded by OU/Dallas fans saying how great they are but when you look at their games you see they are either really good or REALLY bad. Rarely do you ever get an in between game.
After that you have Geno Smith who suffers from what most running quarterbacks do and that's he just doesn't have the size to be a long term QB in my opinion. We have seen this with Vick and many others. Eventually they get shy in the pocket and when forced to make a decision in the pocket consistently, they crumble. Nothing against running QBs, I would like to see one succeed but I remain skeptical. Many might throw RG3 in my face but he's not a running QB, he's a natural thrower who has the ability to run.
What does this all mean in the long run, I guess that's up for you to determine. Take it with a grain of salt if you want but lets face it, Sam will at least get another season to prove he's worth the money and time. There's a reason why Fisher stock piled picks for years to come, in my opinion he's just waiting to surround Sam with the talent needed and is using this season as a way to see what needs to be done. Helping Sam should be top priority this upcoming off season and bringing another QB in through the draft just sets the franchise back.
Do you think this is a make or break season for Sam?
