St. Louis Rams injury report: Scott Wells' status this week still unknown

Dilip Vishwanat

The St. Louis Rams could see center Scott Wells return to action this week.

Center Scott Wells practiced on Wednesday, but the St. Louis Rams center might not be back in action this week against the New York Jets. Nevertheless, head coach Jeff Fisher sounded a positive note about the progress of his veteran lineman when speaking to the media after practice.

"He's coming along well," Fisher said of Wells. "He did a little bit more."

As for Wells' status for the upcoming game, Fisher would only say, "we'll just have to wait toward the end of the week."

Wells resumed practicing following the team's Week 9 bye. Under the rules of the league's new designated for return injured reserve spot, the Rams have three weeks from the time he resumes practicing to put him on the active roster or stick him on the shelf for good. In other words, the team has one more week before a decision is due.

The biggest question remaining is what form the line will take once Wells does return. Robert Turner has played outstanding filling in for Wells, who signed a four-year, $24 million free agent free agent deal with the Rams in the offseason.

The most likely scenario is to slide Turner over to the left guard spot, where he was playing before Wells' injury pushed him into the middle. Turner measures 6-foot-4, 308 pounds which is larger than Shelley Smith who is filling in there now.

There were only three names on the injury report Wednsday. S Darian Stewart has a knee issue. Eugene Sims also has an ailing knee, and Austin Pettis had a toe issue. All three players were limited.
