Danny Amendola is injured. He was our top WR, we now need someone to replace him, and give Sam someone to throw to. So who is it going to be?
The Wrs on the team are as follows
Brandon Gibson- He shows flashes of potential, making key plays, yet at other times, he just has a mind lapse, and drops passes or doesn't run routes properly. He has a good connection with Bradford, but he is too inconsistent, and therefore, I can't see him as the replacement for Danny.
Brian Quick- Quick is a rookie. A very raw rookie. I believe he can be great, maybe a little earlier then people think. And if we ever draft a no.1 type WR, Quick can become a very good No.2. But right now, he can't be counted to be a every down player.
Chris Givens- Gives has speed, and has connected with Sam a couple of times. Unfortunately, Givens has also dropped a ton of passes. He can't seem to hold onto those passes on the inside routes.
Steve Smith- Steve Smith was the Rams free agent pick up, who was a low risk/ high reward kind of pick up. Steve Smith was awesome a couple of years ago in NY, before being plagued by injuries. So far, he hasn't looked like his NY self, and just hasn't been able to form a rapport with Sam Bradford.
Austin Pettis- Austin hasn't seen many balls thrown his way, but from what I have seen, he has got them in key moments, and most of the time, comes up with the catch.
Danny Amendola's role in the offense was more of a flex role, as he could line up anywhere, to exploit mismatches. So the person who replaces Amendola, needs to know most of the plays well, and be able to line up inside or out side. The obvious answer could be Steve Smith. He has the same mold as Amendola, being a slot WR, who can line up outside. Also, while Smith was in form, he was a pretty good catcher and route runner. The problem is, it seems like Smith isn't in form. The Rams have kept inactive a couple of times already, and this could be because of his physical level, or the level of his play. Another problem is that he and Sam haven't really hit it off, and Sam may not instantly start looking his way, especially because of Smiths lack of game time this year. This is why I think Pettis takes over Amendola's role. He has some connection with Sam, and has good hands. While Gibson has more of a connection with Sam, Gibson is more of an outside guy, and he is too inconsistent to rely on. Pettis on the other hand could play well if given the chance. I believe we will see a lot of Pettis, and he maybe about 3/4ths as good as Danny Amendola is, in terms of moving the chains.
