How about before the draft, we...

.....pick up one, and hopefully re-sign one, of these (below) free agent wide receivers. I know that WR talk get's a bit old around here, as it seems to be a topic of oft-heated conversation almost daily. In regards to the position, If it's not our regular season woes, it's the argumentative nature with which we discuss who we should utilize our first pick in the draft on. The way I see it, there's a significant amount of time before draft day with which Jeff Fisher and Co. could do some serious damage in free agency, which begins on March 13th. Knowing that wide receiver is a glaring issue that'll need to be addressed this offseason, my thoughts are that we could immediately upgrade the position with a talented, experienced player and utilize the rest of (or entirety of) the draft to scoop up some much needed help at other positions........you name em!

The chart above shows some pretty telling stats, and comprises averages over the past three seasons. I could go into detail on each particular free agent, but I'll operate under the assumption that not only are you an excellent scratch-n-sniff-sticker-worthy reader, but that you're aware of these fellas and their abilities on the field, as well as the potential headaches caused by one immature, underpaid Eagle.

What I was hoping to get some feedback on, from my fellow Ram fans, is whether or not you think it'd be wise for us to aggressively go after a free agent wide receiver prior to the draft. Again, in reading much of the draft discussion on TST, it seems clear to me that there's a huge Kalil/Blackmon divide. I get it! It'd be nice if we could have them both, but under no perfect-world draft scenario is that going to happen. I do, however, feel that there's boat loads of talent available for FA WR's, and less for legitimate offensive line help. To be honest, I'm torn...and I'll trust that the Rams brass know what they're doing, and intend on putting a product out in 2012 that we'll be proud to watch. Man, do we deserve it!

Furthermore, if you're answer to the aforementioned question regarding snagging a FA was 'yes,' then does that change your opinion on who we take with our first pick? Let's say, hypothetically, that Vincent Jackson (feel free to sub in whoever you'd like) is a Ram on April 26th.........whether it's #2, #4, or otherwise, would you still take Blackmon? There's gotta be a Ram fan out there that would love to see that be the case! The implications of having Lloyd, with another one of these guys highlighted in green could seriously impact the success of our upcoming season. If the Browns were to, ideally (IMO), trade up and we get the 4th and 22nd picks, that would give us three 1st round (essentially) picks to help aid some other very dire positions. I'd love to see a scenario where we go into draft day, and have already solidified one or two receiver spots. Think about having one of these proven WR's already on the team, and being able to take our future LT early in the draft. I'm no draft expert, so hopefully you guys won't mind chiming in with your opinions on the matter.

Who would be your ideal FA wide receiver fit for the Rams? Obviously, they'll all come at different costs and with different skill sets and abilities. Clearly, we cannot afford to overpay at the position, so maybe we don't seek out a WR in FA at all. Thoughts?

Decisions Decisions.......

Welker is out of the discussion. Both Jacksons are possibilities but I think VJax is staying with San Diego. Stevie will probably get locked up too along with Colston. So that leaves Lloyd, Wayne, DeSean, Garcon, and Bowe. Garcon is young and the Colts will be getting rid of Reggie. With Bowe and Lloyd I have zero idea what will happen. So that leaves DeSean and Reggie Wayne.

Yea, I saw Welker and Garcon as locks, too

Welker just isn’t going anywhere……Pat for life. Garcon, I’m guessing, is going to be Lucks best weapon next season. My hope was that VJAX just got the hell outta SD. His salary last year was a joke, and we can easily afford to pay him 1.2mil

Agreed but if Vjax is willing to put up with all the bull shit that he has through out his career in SD

He will probably put up with more.

I don't consider Pettis a lock by any means.

He’ll need a great training camp and preseason to be considered worthy of reserving the first two weeks of the season. Maybe I’m too hard on him, but if you have a season like Pettis did all while using P.E. drugs, you suck. If DX is healthy, he’s a great role player. If DX is not healthy, he’s gone. I don’t see Gibson sticking around any longer than preseason. There should at least be two new WRs on the opening day roster, and that’s if Lloyd resigns.

You’re definitely too hard on him. Compare his stats to other WRs taken around him and he stands up favorably. Remember, he was just a rookie last year and he stayed healthy and had good hands. We can use that guy. Like you I don’t like the PED thing…..that needs to stop.

You're not going to convince me that

going into the first 2 weeks of the season with 4 or 5 receivers on the active roster is a smart idea. We’ve been down that road before. Pettis showed me absolutely nothing last year to make me think that he’s worth putting in our back pocket and reserving a roster spot.

As long as it’s not Desean. Bad attitude, not a hard worker, and actually terribly terribly overrated. He’s not even a top 30 receiver in the league, but gets talked about/treated like he is top 10

Maybe I'm wrong about this one

or even just overly optimistic, but he’s gotta grow up at some point. I think Fisher could keep his ass in check! I certainly don’t think he needs to get paid like a top 10 WR, to your point, as he certainly didn’t perform like one last year

by DCRamFan on Jan 31, 2012 7:11 AM CST up reply actions

I think a lot of these guys stay

Vincent Jackson is a big play guy and he’s the Chargers number one WR, the Chargers would be stupid to let him go elsewhere, but its possible he signs elsewhere after the dispute he seems to have with them after failing to reach a contract extension in the past. Lloyd, I dunno he says he liked the signing of Jeff Fisher before but I could see the Patriots offering him a deal after they cut Ocho. Desean I’m not sure I would take a chance on, plus I would prefer a consistent reciever, dude will go off for 200 yards one game then have 30yds the next game. Plus he showed a lack of effort of there this year, if hes upset again, does he give up again? No thanks.

I think Reggie Wayne is a possibility, he still has a few productive years, and I think the Colts let Garcon go too. Still I think Wayne would prefer to go to a team that is close to a championship, he knows his career is nearing the end. Garcon maybe, I wouldn’t give him a huge contract though, he drops a lot of passes, isn’t that consistent but he’s young and can make big plays. Stevie I don’t see leaving, he battled some injuries and had a down year, but he’s productive. Bowe gets franchised, no way hes leaving, KC needs him.

Colston thouygh is interesting, the Saints have to resign Brees, Carl Nicks, and Colston. Obviously Brees isn’t leaving so do they resign all 3? Its possible Colston goes elsewhere, hes had a few knee surgeries in the off season as well as a broken collarbone this year and missed all of 2 games I believe. Still he is always productive with great hands, would be awesome to have him as a Ram if the Saints can’t reach a deal with him. Welker isn’t leaving either.

However I think we also need to look at a couple of good recievers who could be legit number two recievers which is Mario Manningham and Robert Meachem. If the Rams can’t get any one of the top recievers I’d like to see them sign one of these two. They won’t require as much money, and you could still look to sign more impact free agents.

by nick-the-greek on Jan 30, 2012 11:43 PM CST reply actions

totally agree

with pretty much everything you have stated here. no way the saints can sign brees, colston, nicks, meachem. i think nicks walks, and one of the two wr.

but like you , i like the idea of going after a #2 wr like manningham and meachem. both are still young, dont have the miles on their legs or lingering injuries. and as you said, come at a much cheaper price tag. another positive to signing these guys is you can then pair them with lloyd and use your 1st rd pick to fill other holes or if you dont sign lloyd draft your #1. brandon lloyd is a #1 receiver in this league.

by itsvon on Jan 31, 2012 4:27 PM CST up reply actions

I'd be ok with either one of the guys you suggested

Manningham and Meachem both made 1.4 and 1.2, respectively. I think the pure production of some of the ‘big name’ FA’s would drive the price up a bit higher, considering both of these guys made more than VJAX in 2011. I certainly don’t want to get in a bidding war over a WR, but if the price is right on the guys highlighted above, I’d rather take their resumes over a #2. Still like the two you mentioned, though

I’m not sure what the plan for the o-line, specifically Smith, is but if it came down to cutting ties with a bust and paying a proven WR, I’m all in. I’ve heard talk of moving Smith to guard. I just gotta wonder how many times this guy gets a chance at another position (and fails) before we finally sever ties. Any of the top 5 OL guys in this years draft have to be able to come in and perform better than Smith has, imo

For all who covet the services of Blackmon....

or any of the above FA’s, are there concerns that Schotty’s new offense might hinder their game/stat lines? Between Plax and Santonio, two pretty damn good receivers, they accumulated less than 1300 yds.

I realize some of that is on Sanchize, but there were 9 PLAYERS that accumulated more yards than Plax/Santonio combined, with 2 of them being TE’s. At least SOME of it has to be playcalling!

by DCRamFan on Feb 1, 2012 4:51 PM CST reply actions

sure, blame schotty

santonio holmes is a big f@#king cry baby. there is a reason pittsburgh let him go, he is a horrible team mate. and plaxico was fresh out of prison and 34 years old. not to mention he was nothing more than a red zone target this year.

so, yes, i will allow some blame to schottys play calling and ground and pound offense as to why those two didnt produce very well. i think its fair to expect a bit of a drop in production from a receiver in schottys offense, but he wasnt exactly dealing with aaron rodgers and his weapons.

by itsvon on Feb 2, 2012 10:36 AM CST up reply actions

weapons?

Donald Driver is 37 years old, and who the hell is Jordy Nelson? Those guys are only weapons because of how well that offensive line protects its QB, and how great that QB is…

If you don’t think that Plaxico is serviceable, I think you’re wrong. And when the ball was thrown to him, he was indeed a red zone threat. 45 catches in 16 games is a joke though, and I’m sure it’s not because he didn’t want the ball. 8 TD’s in 16 games is pretty good, though, considering that’s a TD on every 6th (approx.) catch. Santonio Holmes is a Superbowl MVP, and whether is he’s got an attitude problem or not, he’s a hell of a receiver

These guys are both coming off the worst seasons of their careers. So you can pick Schotty or Sanchez, but one or both of them are responsible for their atrocious numbers. I’ll listen to the Jet’s fans, who I’m positive know more about Schotty than you do, and continue to blame our new offensive coordinator. When I see otherwise, I’ll find you, and apologize. Don’t hold your breath

by DCRamFan on Feb 2, 2012 10:58 AM CST up reply actions

totally agree

i said you CAN blame schotty and/or sanchez. but i dont think the blame solely goes on them. first, they play a totally different style of offense than GB, NO, DET, etc. the jets run a balanced offense and were 17th in pass attempts and those attempts were made by a guy who had one of the worst completion percentages in the league. yes, that is going to hurt the numbers of any wr. that we agree on.

now, is plaxico serviceable? sure, he has proven to be a nice red zone threat this past season. that is what the jets signed him for, to be a target in the end zone and nothing else apparently. who knows why, maybe they didnt want him out in the open field getting hit/hurt. as for santonio, i never said anything about his talent. but, attitude or not, he clearly did not mesh well with his QB there.

so, even after conceding that these guys and any receiver in schotty’s system would probably take a hit in their production. you still went off on a rant as if i disagreed with your point.

donald driver is 37, he was also aaron rodgers 5th leading receiver. behind jennings and nelson (both 2nd round picks, its not like a “who the hell is this wes welker guy” (undrafted)) and then jermichael finley and james jones, two players rams fans would probably fawn over. so yes, not only did GB have a superior line and QB, they also had superior weapons at receiver. but that is neither here nor there, it was just a simple example. an example showing that in a different offensive system (practically a spread offense) with multiple weapons and a team that doesnt fight with the QB can and will put up better passing numbers than a team that doesnt.

by itsvon on Feb 2, 2012 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

My point about Nelson is

that he’s a bi-product of the GB system and therefore he looks f’n awesome. Wes Welker is the same way. Elite QB’s can make average (not to take anything away from Welker) players look great. Where was Austin Collie this year? Two seasons ago, you’d have thought he was the next Wes Welker. Manning’s out, and I almost forgot that Collie was in the NFL. With a passing attack like GB’s, NE"s, NO’s (and previously IND), any receiver is going to look good. I have no doubts that Santonio Holmes could’ve put up those type numbers if he was on a team with a real QB, and an offensive scheme built around getting the ball into their receivers hands. I might be a little critical of Schotty, when the majority of the blame should rest on the shoulders of Sanchez, but if somethings not working on offense, it’s up to the OC to find something that is…..

we just have to hope

that sam the savior is better than the sanchize….i feel like he is.

and im not trying to defend schotty here. im hoping for the best out of him too. i hope that jackson > greene, bradford > sanchez, and he can make something work with that. but i was hoping for the rams to bring in hue jackson.

That I'll absolutely agree with

wanted Hue, disappointed we didn’t get him. I was peeping some of Sanchez’s stats, and his comp. % was abysmal……….but not as bad as Sam’s. Yikes! We need to get that guy some blockers, and a couple of receivers who can hold onto the damn ball!

Something to note...

Early Doucet, also a FA, made 1.2mil in 2011. That’s more than Desean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, and Brandon Lloyd. All three made less than 1mil last year. Veteran Reggie Wayne made nearly 6mil………..none of the other FA WR’s made 3mil EXCEPT……..Steve Smith (4mil)……..of the Eagles. Yikes!

While we are at it

Why don’t we go out and sign TO. Maybe we can bring Randy Moss out of retirement, too.

I'll have to admit

I accidentally drank a bunch of Yuengling’s when I put that up there last night. No chance Plax would follow Schottendinger here…………just not the same Lloyd/McD creepy relationship

would you take TO

at the league minimum?

$1 million?

depending on how things shake out in FA and the draft, i would take the risk

Don't know

but given that he’s the ‘co-owner’ of the team he plays for now, there might be some kind of conflict of interest??? As if owning and playing for the same team isn’t conflict enough. haha
